Hey y'all, I just found a very cool little town in NC Mountains called, West Jefferson.  There is a state park outside of town that this picture was taken from one of its many overlooks.  The town mtns.thumb.jpg.e90207d3ff7140a7653a67c6b9cec166.jpgis little now, but it sure seems like the crowds are starting to find it so get there sooner than later.

Capped off the day with dinner at the Log Cabin in Highlands. Sad to say Cafe REL in Franklin hasn’t been open and prospects aren’t looking good for the future, but we’ll see.

Wont know in this car John, someone lowered it before I got it, handles like a go kart but it won’t clear a paper cup in the road.

Parkway at 215, the top half of 215 is one of the more amazing stretches of asphalt anywhere and the bottom ain’t bad either, I never tire of it.

Well it wasn’t bad even though the menu is condensed and there’s a new/different chef for now, Molly loved the trout.

We spent a fair amount of time on the BRP the last two days and it made me think of a couple tidbits I’ve related before but it’s been years and a lot of folks have joined since then. We’re fortunate to have it at our disposal pretty much anytime except Dec-Mar, it is a fantastic roadway, all 469 miles of it and is easy to take for granted.

Anyone that’s spent much time traveling the Parkway knows the southern end of it is the most dynamic as that’s where the biggest mountains are. But there is one section IMO that stands apart from the others. Normally, it follows one of the higher ridges of the Southern Appalachians traversing from side to side in a mostly gentle elongated S fashion. But the section from US 23/74/64 to US 19, what I call the Waynesville exit to Maggie Valley exit is different. Most of the curves are much longer duration, some up to 180 degrees, they just keep on giving. You can check it out on Google Earth but that doesn’t really convey how good it is, in person it’s quite noticeable.

I was on the way to a BMW rally in WV in 2004 and stopped in a restaurant at closing time called the Log Cabin. The nice lady said she’d turn the grill back on and cook me a burger. I was the only one there and struck up a conversation with an elderly man sitting in the corner. Told him I liked rustic places like this and he said he built it for his wife and they grew all their own veggies out back. He also said he was a retired Nat. Forest Ranger and before that was a bridge engineer and helped build the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I said it was probably my favorite road in the country and that I’d noticed there were no decreasing radius curves going in either direction and asked him how that was possible. He just explained that they took extra care laying it out and measured every curve several times to insure a constant radius. The project started in 1936 and was completed in 1966, think about that the next time you’re riding or driving it.

Am I right in thinking that place looks familiar from a certain Halloween dinner?704916556_dsc_0197.thumb.jpeg.80a2424d7a603748205c327b649033a9.jpeg

Ha!  It's the Antioch Baptist Church, which features in the lyric of the 1973 Charlie Daniels song "Uneasy Rider" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJrRwTTqm0o).  Not having spent much time in the South, I've never seen one before.

Just came across this article on it, a little more in depth.

Interesting.  But given that "this impressive structure was built by an intrepid group of freed slaves in the Reconstruction Era South", I'm guessing it's not the same one that a Mississippi redneck was a member of in Charlie Daniels' song!

I'm not surprised.  In my limited experience, there is a plethora of Baptist churches of myriad kinds in the South.  I recall riding through an intersection in a town in NC and noting that there were churches on all four corners, and they were all Baptists of one kind or another!

I'd been putting off this year's episode of replacing rotten "treated" decking due to the heat of summer.  So this week, instead of riding, I've been crawling around on the front deck of The Treehouse, flopping around like a mullet out of water, tearing out the rotten boards and fitting new treated boards.  (No pics allowed)

When I built the house 13 yrs ago, I bought "treated" material from 3 different sources, so have no idea from which source the bad wood came.  I think they sprayed it and forgot to pressurize it, and I've been replacing 4-8 boards each year...one board this week for the second time in 13 years!

But once again the deck is solid and the teak rockers & tables are pressure-washed...3 house guests arriving the 17th for a week of golf; target practice; scotch; cigars; grillin'; and the creation of more memories.   Life is good!

My original thought was to circle the lake when I got there but Garmin said you’ll need to hoof it. I’m just not that brave.  :classic_biggrin:

Tewks, when I first took a quick glance, I wondered where you got off to. Right in front of your windshield, I thought I saw a kangaroo.

I am over due to see an eye doc.:5146:

Bill:  I don't know how you find these places, but I love that you share them!  In the 4th photo the past jumps out...the swing hanging from the old tree;  the cross in the yard; and the abandoned home conjure up a mix of good times, bad times, and moving on.  Life is like that sometimes.

Thanks John, the old south is still out there if you know where to look. It’s a dirt route I put together 10-12 years ago from Fla to NC. Didn’t realize it at the time but it runs close to the woodpecker trail and a couple other historic roads in places. The guys are camping/or in cabins at state parks each night.
