ESokoloff
Just got back from running an errand & found a group of car owners heading out for a caravan. Ok Bill, what’s the story on the Porsche & the silver Convertible? 1 Link to comment

Ok Bill, what’s the story on the Porsche & the silver Convertible? The red Speedster judging by the lack of rocker and bumper trim, fake Rudge knock-offs with what appear to have only 4-lugs (VW), bad door fit, and wavy bodywork I'd say a fiberglass replica and a lousy one at that. The silver car probably a replica too of a Lotus Elan, nobody in their right mind would ruin a real one with those goofball flares and wheels : ) Link to comment
MikeB60
Short ride up to the FDR State Park just south of Warm Springs, GA. 48 state flag and FDR under a tree. Little closer... The view from Dowdell's Knob. This was a favorite picnic spot for FDR. That's a grill that he had built in the background. 5 Link to comment

That's a great spot Mike not to mention the road along the top of that ridge getting there (Ga 190), I call it the mini BRP : ) I led a 3 day BMW club ride (about 25 bikes ) to Barber from Jax one year on backroads and that was the end of the first day, we stayed and had dinner at Callaway Gardens. When we got onto 190 we were stuck behind a really bad slowpoke for the duration. When I saw that turn-off to the left I said screw this we're going that way, having not scouted or knowing where it went (and no GPS). I just prayed things would work out ok, it turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip, everybody loved it and thought it was part of the plan because we'd visited some other historical sites earlier. I told them the truth later : ) 5 Link to comment

I'd add that a replica of some of those iconic cars is a great way to enjoy at least a part of their persona without the worry or stratospheric entry fee of an original. Heck some of the higher quality ones are amazingly nice and likely drive better than a real one, particularly some of Speedsters, 550's, and now Beck makes one of a 904 with a big six from a later 911. Also an Elan was built similar to a kit car when they were new, it was a fiberglass body mated to a steel frame and only weighed 1500 lbs ready to drive, they were a quick little car in their day. It’s the car Mazda was most trying to emulate and characterize with the original Miata. Actually the 1964 Porsche 904 was made the same way if a little more complicated, they were built at the Heinkel bomber factory and the only Porsche manufactured like that. 2 Link to comment

roadscholar
Picnic lunch today. Then we drove all around Pomona Park and Welaka, found some good roads I hadn’t been on, dirt and paved. On the way back just outside Palatka we came up behind this old Chevy van I told Molly there’s only one like that in the world and I know the guy that owns it : ) an old buddy Norm Nelson that I haven’t seen in a couple years. It’s a ‘71 with 677,000 miles he bought new, he also still has a ‘58 Sportster he rode two up to Alaska on his honeymoon and a gold ‘77 R100RS he bought new too. He’a competed in the Motorcycle Cannonball the last four outings finishing 3rd and 2nd on BMW’s but DNF’d several years ago on a 1911 Reading Standard when the 2nd crankshaft went kaput. I drove over to see him when they came thru Pueblo, Co., they started in Atlantic City. He sold that bike to the Barber Museum then got another one like it he’s running in this years Cannonball, I’ll be following along online. This years event starts in northern Michigan with among others stops in Cherokee, NC, Myrtle Beach, Birmingham (Barber Museum) and thru Mississippi ending somewhere in Texas. If you haven’t seen this traveling road show before try to at one of the stops, it is well worth it, a true test of man but mostly machine. Most of the riders are getting up there (Norm is 77) and the bikes average age are around 100. 6 Link to comment

Gardenia’s up next Our magnolia has only been in the ground for about four years, still not many blooms. Coming from Louisiana, where I recall most Magnolias were trimmed as "trees", as mine gets bigger, I'ma prune it so it looks more like a tree than a bush(like I see most in NC are). As much as we try, gardenias just don't want to grow for us. I have been pulling peaches off the tree (in ground two years),.......nothing like it. 1 Link to comment
