David, I logged onto El Paseo website. Being Spanish my mother language (not my mother's who was Swiss)I thought I would clarify that paseo does not mean adventure, but a stroll. When "el" (in English "the") is added, then Paseo becomes a street or avenue, a place where people stroll.

Actually, it can and does mean "adventure" though "Spanish" really varies by country. smile.gif

Officer, I was strolling The Dragon, when out of nowhere a wild gang of Harley riders came up behind me. I felt my life was in danger, so I did the only thing I could think of. thumbsup.gif

and that one, Kinsley, is the exception to the rule. In such case, sauntering the Dragon became quite an adventure with the invaluable help of a wild gang of Harley riders... wink.gif

"Spanish" really varies by country

such is the impression many Americans have of the language formally studied in the Spanish speaking countries as Castellano.

What varies is the colloquial Spanish, in the same way perhaps that colloquial English spoken in Jamaica varies from formal English, but I doubt you will find "da street lick me foot" on an English textbook determining that you hurt your foot on the curbe.

Paseo comes from paso, step, and determines a leisurely stroll, a casual sauntering; one step at a time. Pasear is a verb, and one can pasear on foot, or on horseback, because horses also take steps. Saying that one can pasear in a motorcycle, or car, would be a stretch, because motorcycles or cars don't take steps, they roll; that's why the correct form is "andar" when it comes to wheels.

Now, last summer I rolled for an hour or so behind a pack of Harleys climbing the twisties from Questa to Red River. They took this at such a leisurely pace that they were really paseando, even if they were rolling, because one could have kept up with them on foot.

But an adventure? I doubt that you will find that in a Spanish dictionary as a definition of paseo; but again, I might be wrong, as many times I have been known to be.

Just for kicks and giggles I went to Dictionary.com and used their cheesy translater found here and it came up with the english word for paseo to be stroll. But as has been said, there are probably many versions of spanish and it could have even more meanings than the two that we are aware of.

Having taken a semester and a half of high school spanish from which I remember only "Senora P es muy gordo y feo" I feel I'm 100% qualified to have an opinion on this, and as such I 100% agree with Chris' translation.

A GREAT weekend of riding, friends and food!

Tho in my part of the world it means more:

"A GREAT weekend of riding, friends and food someplace one heck of a lot warmer and more scenic!"

It could translate to "a small Toyota" or "toothy parasites that eat your brain" and I'd still go. smile.gif

Oh, and FWIW....

Language is used and that's where it has meaning. Normal people don't look up words in dictionaries to see if they are speaking properly. Meaning is exchanged in dialogue based on local customs.

What can I say. In my experience from a specific part of the world, "el paseo" is used as an adventure. Not a dangerous adventure, but something like what you might say to your kids or your students in elementary school: "Hey, let's have an adventure! Let's have a scavenger hunt!" [clapping and jumping in the background]

This experience is informed by going to school in Spanish as a young boy in Costa Rica, starting at age 4; living in Guatemala until I was 18; and then teaching Spanish at the college level to earn my way through graduate school.

All that to say that it is used in that way in that region. Maybe it's not in the pure world of castellano that you come from, but no me interesa, so to speak. smile.gif Next time I'll try to be a lot more careful in choosing names. smile.gif

Anyway, let's drop this here. That's not what this thread is about and it really makes no difference, okay? It's not like we're going to change the name of the "Great Times with Friends" festival. tongue.gif

Start a thread in "Other" if you'd like to talk about the evolution of language, including etymology, one of my favorite subjects, and I'll join you. grin.gif

Now back to El Paseo. Who else is coming? I'm guessing we'll have north of 100 people there this Spring (and yes, it should be "spring" and not "Spring" but I don't like the way it looks).

MY dictionary defines "El Paseo" as;

The action taken by a BMW rider when she/he overtakes a herd of Harley's.

cool.gif

All four events have been a great adventure.

The trip there, strolling the streets of Cherokee.

Partaking of cigars and conversation in the parking lot.

Enjoying epicurean delights at Myrtle's Table. smile.gif

Riding with family and friends.

Being passeo'd by faster riders. blush.gif

Scenery, camaraderie, it doesn't get better than this.

Can't wait 'til Blairsville. clap.gif

IN! clap.gif Thought it would be too late , but called anyway."Anna" is the current BMW reservation specialist and she was "off" for a few days, but I finally got her.She booked me in and just as I was about to ask how many rooms were left ,she said I was the last one ! .This must be my day for close calls; took the wife's new bike out for a 40 mile ride this morning ,and it died (electrical) just one half block frome home.

I'm another newbe. Got the RT last May , made one trip so far (1000 mi.) Had a great time at the Cedar Key meet, and looking forward to meeting all you folks who write these informative (and entertaining) posts. thumbsup.gif

Wow! The hotel has 65 rooms, and so with a bunch of folks doubling up, and this far out from the actual event, I suspect we'll easily break 100. smile.gif

David - after my post , I started to worry that maybe she meant last of the non-smoking . (She had asked me that).

Called Anna back ( she works 3 - 11), after some confusion she called me back , said that indeed there were two roomsleft.Did't say if non-smoking or not. Sorry if I misled anyone but if you want in-- ACT FAST

Two months ago, they had no BMW rate rooms available.

Tonight, I was able to book a non-smoking room for Thu-Sun.

I guess that means I'm going to my second El Paseo... thumbsup.gif

I just tried downloading the routes and maps (SPORT_TOURING.ZIP) and got a "Zip file corrupted" message. Has anyone else had this problem? any suggestions?

Looking forward to seeing you all in Blairsville.

I was able to download without a problem. Sorry, no suggestions except to try again.

Note it's MapSource 6.5. (Although you said zip error crazy.gif)

Also, how do I open the maps if I don't have a Garmin unit?

No worries. We will have .jpg or .pdf files of the maps as well as turn-by-turn instructions to put up on the site before too long. Well also have hard copies at the hotel.

Or if you want to string together your own routes, we are using the N. Georgia maps from Info-map.com

Well, I just got a call from the country commissioner, wondering why we've taken every room in the best (of two, basically) hotels in town. smile.gif We had a nice chat, actually, but it turns out that there's a huge event there:

http://www.tourdegeorgia.com/2005/index.asp

So, we'll obviously want to stay off the roads they are going to be using. Like Suches, Brasstown Bald, etc., on the particular days they'll be on them.

Anyway, just a heads up.

Hey, scr*w those cyclists, we planned our event first.

Sounds like our ride planners have some work to do.

Link to comment

We know where they're going to be.

460269-raycharles.gif

Stage 4 Dalton to Dahlonega on Friday

Stage 5 Gainesville to Brasstown Bald on Saturday

Stage 6 Blairsville to Alpharetta on Sunday

Apparently, they move through pretty quickly, so the road closures are limited to an hour or so directly ahead of and behind them. You could, for example, do Brasstown Bald on Saturday morning, well in advance of their arrival.

Last year, a couple of members marshalled the race on Triumphs.

David,

My understanding of physics suggests that THEY should stay off the roads WE are going to be using. grin.gif

True! But I remember riding with a bicycle event in Gunnison at the first UnRally. Not fun getting around all of them. smile.gif

Anyway, just a heads up.

Might it be wise to give them a heads up too, and let them know that ~100 motorcyclists will be in the area? The racers will likely stick to the designated courses at the designated times, but I can imagine advance/course-prep crews, transport vehicles, and fans taking scenic rides on alternate routes (or riding the race courses before/after the event).

The beauty of Blairsville (N. GA) is that there are loads of options for us. Though, I would imagine that it will be a little congested in town.

The guy who called me is head of the town's side of things, so he's completely in the loop now. It was actually a pretty interesting discussion because he had NO idea why 100 motorcyclists had completely taken over a hotel on a big weekend. I think he was a bit nervous until I practiced "full disclosure."
