Oh ... will masks be required?   At least we can wear flip flops!

They don’t refer to them as “flip-flops”…. I think they call them “Chinese Motorcycle Boots”

I think this is the line for drive thru at the local KFC!

It's raining here in Ellijay. There was NO CHANCE of rain when we left.

In the meanwhile, please offer your input on short and long sleeve shirts here:

I was in Dahlonega last Thursday to Sunday. Got a lot of rain on Friday.  It was muddy for the Bret Tkacs ADV course.  Worse it was cold too, looks like the temp is a bit better.  Looking forward to the ride in a few weeks with warmer weather this time.

I don’t think the new map data update will cause any problems with your BMW Nav 6 (VI). I have been using it since it’s release a few weeks ago and my 6th replacement of the Nav 6 works just as good or bad as it did with the old version.

But as far as the map data update is related to the routes for START 2023. It should not make a difference. So don’t feel obligated to update.

Thanks Bernie!  My comment was kind of tongue in cheek.  I’ll update tonight.

Yessss??? We would be ready to publish the routes, once we can locate one of our scouting team.

He didn't stop at the Bridge Out sign and has not been seen since.

Thank you @RandyShields. I just checked Garmin Express and there is a Map Data update for my Nav 6. I have 2024.1 installed on the GPS and BaseCamp, but the new version is 2024.10! I will install it and check if it fixes or messes up all the routes for START 2023. Thank you Randy for noticing. And I guess thank you, Garmin.

Update: No difference. The Map Info on the Nav 6 says 2024.10 version, but if you have it connected to BaseCamp (Mac version) it reads 2024.1, the routes are the same.

**ADMINISTRIVIA**

In an effort to keep specific information contained and easy to find, we will adding some additional threads today and later this week.

1) There will be a separate T-Shirt Thread. In this thread (and only there) is where you should order your shirts, ask questions, etc. Short-Sleeve shirts only for START (Spring), long sleeve shirts will be offered for FART (Fall) this year. This does not mean we will be doing shirts every year.

2) The GPS Thread will contain the route download link and it's in this thread where you can ask questions, discuss issues, etc.

3) Local Ellijay Info - This thread will highlight some of the basic information (gas, booze, food, Doc-in-the -box, etc. ) and new additions near our hotel.

4) Group Meal info and sign up.

Hopefully this will keep various information easy to find and at your fingertips.

Welcome.  In the past, I have noticed that a Garmin map with a 0 at the end is the same as the single digit version (e.g., a .1 is the same as a .10).

I just cancelled a room with 2 beds at the Stratford Motor Inn if anyone is still looking for a room.

No. I should have the invoice today for the design.

Edit: I'm not going to offer the shirts until I have a firm price.

so I know I updated in the last 90 days and mine shows 2024.1  and I just  connected my XT to the computer and did not get a map update info box, so I would also conclude that the current version is 2024.1

Looks nice.  I will be on the list for one.  Question though -- I don't remember HelenNBack being a series like El Paseo or the BRR.  I thought it was just a unique name for the Helen, GA destination once or twice.  Any feedback on this observation?

Hi Randy, Sorry to take so long to get back with you about this. @Lone_RT_rider I think will have some insight into this, and @TyTass as well.  When I came on board to help Kinsley, being relatively new the events myself, I asked Kinsley about the event history. Ken did not address HeleN Back directly in his response, but as I recall from conversations with him and/or @Lone_RT_rider after the BRR transition, HeleN Back worked, along with START, but the idea was never to keep Helen as a permanent location. HeleN Back was and is a great name and it fits Kinsely's  mystique perfectly. I believe that @Lone_RT_rider is the one who actually came up with START, as he and Kinsley were brainstorming a companion name to FART.

For those of you who knew Ken Insley (Kinsley), here's some of his email to me, responding to my questions about the event. I've edited this some to protect the source code , and I also wanted to keep in Ken's references to others who were helping at that time.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the compliment on the photos. I leave early and I find the best shots are taken closest to sunrise, so I often ride alone because it's early and my stops can take 15 minutes or more. I just have to see something of interest during that great light.

Thanks for stepping up and expressing your willingness to help with START/FART.
The history is that David Baker started it with El Paseo in 2003 and it ran for 5 years. Shawn Goulding [Lone_RT_Rider] and Matt Sturgis took it over and called it Blue Ridge Rendezvous.
I had been putting routes together since the 1st El Paseos and sharing them with riding buddies, but the group as whole expressed interest, so I started sharing with everyone. When Shawn and Matt decided they were wanting to pass the torch, they nominated me, and the group seemed supportive of it because I was doing the routes anyway so I took it over and re-named it. I'm more of a behind the scenes type naturally, but I did have ideas on how to improve what we were doing.

Craig [tytass] offered to help and he had some experience with other organized events, and in areas I care less about, so we made a great team. Craig and I took turns negotiating with one of us doing the Hotel and the other doing the Saturday meal. I always do the routes and the logo/sticker with Joel Gross and Craig has been doing the graphics for the announcement and keeping the list of attendees up to date, which made us look more professional.

I hope this helps, Randy!

So, the GS is hiding in the corner.  He learned just today the RT is going to START.  It's the first time he's been left at home alone during an ART.  I think he's jealous.

He suspects there'll only be one motorcycle in the garage shortly after START as one will make its way to a new owner.

Thanks to @Lowndes, the Timbren axle-less gear supports the trailer.  Somewhat fiddly but it tows much more smoothly as road shock on one side isn't transmitted to the other.  Neat gear.  Unfortunately, they raised a trailer rear a few inches a ball/hitch with a 3" lift solves that issue. Spendy, but neat.

The next alteration planned is to convert the trailer to a drop bed as I did my first trailer before selling.

Ha !    You'd be surprised the number of cup holders you might see at START.   And like they say ... it's not what you ride but THAT you ride.

Looking forward to meeting you!

 Hey, Duc!!

We even let Harleys ride with us!!  NO problem on the wing.  I rode a ST1300 one time myself.  It ain't all Beemers here, like Ed said above.

What part of FL are you in??  There's a good contingent from Jax, led by Bernie, here, plus others.

Just show up and wade in.  You'll fit in splindidly, I can tell.

Got a room yet??  If not, best hurry, not sure any are left at the main digs but there are several others nearby.  Let us know if we can help.

Why are all of you forgetting the new guy rule of bringing cigars and brown liquor? It is not what you ride but what you bring! :3:

Welcome to the zoo. I am from NE-FL. We ride or break bread with anyone. Just show up. Download the routes to the navigation device of your choice and I am sure you will connect with someone to ride with. Just always remember to ride your ride.

Unfortunately, I must scratch my name off of the list. I was looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and friends, but it is not in the stars for this trip. I was going to bring a few lbs.of our local smoked brisket for our board BBQ connoisseur, but that too will have to wait.  Hope all have a great time
