szurszewski
Had to go over to central-ish Oregon for a few work days. My little suv was kind enough to haul the S over so I could take a short (eight hour) riding break in the middle of Friday. Found some new roads and new burger spot too :) 13 Link to comment

Darbarian
I am struggling to resolve this low-angle sun problem. This time of year, the sun is always at a low angle in Montana. I bought a new helmet that fits my head very well, but offers no room for sunglasses and has no drop-down sun shield. What is the right way to safely handle the low sun? Link to comment
Hosstage
Check on an auto dimming/transition shield for the helmet? I'm not even sure if something like that is available, but worth checking out. Edit: just checked, it's called photochromic and is available, check for availability for your helmet. Link to comment

Is that just a Montana thing or does the sun hit low angle anywhere else 8 hours ago, Darbarian said: What is the right way to safely handle the low sun? Since I run shield up most time, I ran electrical tape across the bottom of one of my helmets that didn't have an internal sun visor. I'd use it as a sun visor similar to a car, drop it low enough just to shade the eyes. 'Twas only a single strip, so I hadn't any concern about not seeing ahead of me. 1 Link to comment
Darbarian
The further you live (ride) from the equator, the lower the sun angles. Southern USofA would have much higher mid-day sun angles fall through spring than northern. Link to comment

taylor1
Ride west in the morning and east in the afternoon. Kidding aside, the photochromic shield that hosstage pointed out seems like it would be the ticket. Link to comment
Darbarian
Reviews on photochromic did not look good. I found none available anyway. What I did find were two direct replacement shields that I ordered for $101 - one dark smoke, the other light smoke. The Arai stock replacement system is quick and easy enough I can simply carry two alternatives in my pack. Speaking of my pack, I found a nice thrift-store backpack of heavy canvas that fits in the patrol trunk where police bikes have radios. Nice, tidy kit that keeps my bike clean, simple and adds almost no weight. Thank you guys for heading me off in the right direction ... I think. Link to comment

That might be, but I know going to work and going home, I'm facing the angle of the sun both ways during my commute during fall and spring. Winter is dark and dark, summer is light and light. Redman
Htad reason to go to Charlotte (Michigan). Is about 90 miles, and past the other side of urban area of Grand Rapids and mostly straight flat roads over that way, so I seldom ride that way. BUt I did ride cuz was such a great day yesterday. Afterwards I though was close to town I had lived in when was in 8-9-10th grade (jeepers, 54 years ago). So rode around there, looked around town, old house, school, downtown and such. And then found way home on state highways and country roads, avoiding urban area and interstates. About 220 miles, four and a half hours on the road. Didnt stop for roadside pics. But did take pic at this place. Was intersting, as a teenager, to work/volunteer there. Could show up during the spring season and be assigned a task, either tapping trees, collecting the sap, working in the bottling or other. Volunteers could logg thier hours, name a community group, and proceeds then allocated to those groups. 3 Link to comment

MikeRC
We've had a great fall here. Dry and warm and a slow transition to fall colours. Usually by Canadian Thanksgiving the trees have lost their leaves from September frosts and wind. But not this year. Rode out to the Alberta Badlands for lunch. The area is a prolific source of Late Cretaceous fossils and also home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum. Not an exciting ride, but nice trip with riding buddies through the (harvested) grain fields and badlands. Mike C 11 1 Link to comment

And stopped for a quick lunch - yum, good. Stopped for pics in a few places. 7 Link to comment

Bernie
I rode to Moultrie, GA to meet @60Aviator for lunch at 3 Crazy Bakers in the downtown square. Here is a picture of the sunrise at the FL/GA state line during my refueling stop. It was a little chilly for this FL boy this morning (51F). White Chicken Chili is just what was needed to warm me up. Of course the weather was absolutely gorgeous and it warmed up to 86F on the way home. It was a great day for riding. Next Saturday is the October SECFF Lunch, weather forecast for next Saturday is promising. 10 1 Link to comment
