Kernville Extension

Ed, Carl. Scott and I headed towards Paso Robles the Sunday AM of Kernville. I believe this was Carl's inaugural ride with Ed's multi-day route planning, and both he and his RT got Baptised....literally. That was after an 8 mile dirt section out of Parkfield, were we saw 50-60 wild boar, elk, and a bunch of other critters. We also rode a rough section of road that had so many patches you could barely see the original road. Carl dubbed it "Ed's Dawn to Dusk Adventure Motorcycle Tours",  after we rolled in 10 minutes past dusk each night. Ed loves backcountry and mountain roads, and riding till the sun is down. At one point Carl joked,, "If I keep riding with you guys, I'm going to need a GS!!"

I replied, "Ed has that effect on people" ..... while grinning and sitting atop a 2022 1250GS.:)

Sorry for the repost on the "RT Baptism" picture if yours looks good.  On my computer it looked like the original glitched somehow, and it was too good to miss.

Cheers

Just reminds me how much beautiful country this nation has, how little of it I've seen, and how much "work" I'll have a head of me to catch up.  😁😎  Gonna burn through lots of tires, and use lots of that bad, ol', oil and gas stuff! :5200:

Traffic is definitely a nuisance.  However, it's the weather that's a killer.  😏

I figure at my average rate of travel, that's only 36, one-hour days of riding.  Don't wanna miss the best parts by blasting by it all at once.

Piece of cake!🙃😁

78 mile round trip for Chinese food, Temps were 32° when I left home, 28° when I returned, Downeast Maine.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Maine still has men of hardy stock, I see.  👍😁

Hmm, Maine must not have icy roads in winter.  (I know from personal, recent experience, that they don't maintain their roads for crap.)

There was one ice patch...I watch out for them.  Slow and straight is the rule.  Using cager tire tracks helps to keep your tires on a warmer patch of asphalt, due to the friction heat of rolling tires.  Traction sand can be a blessing and a curse.  I have been riding in Maine winters for 30 years.  My first year riding I just kept going after the season ended, and I have ever since.  In retrospect, I have been lucky to garner the experience I have without ever having been down.  The cold is not a problem for me as I work on a scallop dragger all winter.  Both are cold, but I am wet on the boat, and dry on the bike.

After my late morning stop for a bagel and some coffee, it cleared up. Home after 350+ miles.

Was rainy the other day, so that washed salt off the roads.

46-48 degF today, and that is about the best that can expect, so went for some short rides and fill tank on return trip.

Seems that 6 or 8 surfers had about same idea

GS1100GK and Shadow500 needed a ride and fill up too.

(but didnt bother with pic for Shadow500)

Not a lot of miles, maybe total of 50 miles, but was good to get out.

Hmmm, I'm just admiring the athlete who parks his bike on the opposite side of a highway to snap his scenic shot, knowing that if a vehicle comes suddenly speeding down on him from his opposite direction, that he'll be able to quickly jump on his bike and clear the lane.  I suppose I could have done this once upon a time, but it's tougher doing that now with my walker and cane.    🤣🤣😎

There have been loads of places where I thought "Wow, this would make a great picture", then I look in the rear view mirror, and add "... but the blood and guts just after the shot would probably spoil it, after that big truck hits me."  Plus, the egress issue and condition of the soil always give me pause.  I parked the bike in a pretty nice spot near a neighboring lake, took my shot, and then returned to the bike only to find that the "firm gravel" wasn't firm enough to hold the bike, and the middle kickstand hand sunk even with the tires.   Was a bit of work ploughing myself outta there, until I remembered "Oh, that's right, I have a motorcycle with +/- 100 horses that can help, if only I start it and flick my right wrist"  🙄  Anyhow, it seemed complicated at the time.

Nice pix.  Hope you're having a blast on your desert rides.

The Friday after thanksgiving had me in the Santa Monica mts on an unusually clear day. On saddle peak rd at one turnout was a view of century city, downtown la, mt baldy, and big bear way in the distance. It was unbelievable.  ¡After lunch in agoura I rode down Latigo to see four Channel Islands, in one view!  Oy!

from left to right on the horizon:  Catalina, and right behind it San Clemente, Santa Barbara, and San Nicolas in the clouds.

Got out for a nice ride today. This is Core Sound. Designated  ORW. Outstanding Resource Water. It is some of the very cleanest on the entire east coast

Yeah till you zoom in & spot the NEMA 5-15P Water-Proof plug & spring-wound timer:rofl:

In all seriousness it’s quite a pleasant ORV due to lack of clutch management but quite a handful with its weight & 90/10 tires.

It has been known to take a nap occasionally while off-road tho….

Big Tujunga Dam is a 244-foot-high concrete arch dam in Los Angeles County, California, spanning Big Tujunga Canyon northeast of Sunland, in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Completed in 1931, it provides flood control and groundwater recharge for the San Fernando Valley. Wikipedia

A small group from SoCal, including a few of the Usual Suspects, took a pre-Christmas ride up Highway 39 into Azusa Canyon and over to Mt. Baldy. Although California has many problems, weather is not one of them. The local news described an "Extreme Cold Weather System". Yeah.....California cold. It got down to the low 50's in the flatlands, and the upper teens in the mountains above 7000'. Treacherous weather for sure  :classic_biggrin:

First stop was Crystal Lake, for a bowl of Adams chili.

Resized_Resized_20221222_103319.thumb.JPEG.8fb7dafdffa00c2761772d8c7a6ddfab.JPEG

Much thanks to the bravery of @LBump who met us there with side cases filled with a load of avocados. He described facing off with a gang of impetulant squirrels to protect his harvest, which immediately drew "Caddyshack" comparisons from the crowd....no good deed goes unpunished. That said, someone needs to check his internet search history for "How to Make Explosives" to determine if an intervention is necessary   :4323:.

IMG_7971.thumb.JPG.769652230b0b2a4664d6f3473fccf207.JPG

Besides gifting a dozen avocados to each of us, he was also able to barter a half dozen for a cup of chili. Great job Larry!!

Under the heading, "You'll never know what you'll see when on a ride", we spotted these skid marks leading off the side of the mountain. Upon further inspection, it appears someone tried to do a burnout on a CURVING mountain road....and may have slightly miscalculated the stopping distance.

IMG_8094.thumb.PNG.55dd028080a29026894642ce3b20e6b4.PNG

OK, definitely miscalculated stopping distance.....we found this looking off the side of the mountain.

IMG_8095.PNG.dd57e1c4ff2d8d2de784f60f8be73ae1.PNG

Fortunately there didn't seem to be anyone down there...lots of footprints going up and down. The scene appeared to be a few days old. Hopefully no serious injuries.

So, be safe, and avoid burnouts on a curving roads.....  :4317:

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Best wishes on a safe 2023!

Kind of scary to see that car in the weeds, then really funny once you know how it got there and no one is in there. Nice driving, knucklehead.

Exactly.... At first it was "did this just happen?". At first glance it looked pretty fresh. It took us a minute to figure things out.
