I'm no GPS expert, but I believe that a .GDB file is native to Garmin and Mapsource. A .GPX file is more of a generic text file for GPSs. The .GPX file IS a bunch of text. The .GDB file should import just fine into Mapsource unless maybe its outdated.

I hate to ask a dumb question, but I'm going to anyway. What is the difference between the GDB and GPX files. When I try to download the GPX files I get a bunch of text. If I right click on the link, and save it to a file on my computer it shows no time required for riding each route. I have an old version of Mapsource with NA 7 maps for a Garmin 2610.

In this case, the information in each file format is the same.

GDB is Garmin's way of doing things and GPX is more universal (other softwares can read them)...at least that's my understanding. In other words if you had something other than a Garmin that can accept route files, you would use the GPX file.

Just download the GDB to your computer, open MapSource or BaseCamp, then open the file and it should work after doing the recalculations. Check your maps to be sure you're using the latest version you have and Preferences for routing.

GPX (GPS eXchange format) files work just fine in Basecamp and in more recent Garmin GPS units. GPX is the file format I've been using when transferring routes/waypoints/tracks from Basecamp to my Garmin Montana and now my BMW Navigator V.

Thanks. I got the GPX files to open, but the elapsed time shows all zeroes where the other routes showed the amount of time to ride them. I have to get some new maps and GPS. They don't want to recalculate properly either. It shows riding across a lake where there is no road on the Dragon route. I don't think I'm up for that kind of water crossing.

Burt, not to diminish Ken's hard work but you don't need a GPS there. There are no bad roads in or out of Robbinsville, but here are a few key ones. Look at Google Maps. Ride the Cherohala Skyway (143/165) and Deal's Gap (129) in both directions, they're that good. Just hit the dragon early or late in the day to avoid most of the bad behavior. From the dragon take hwy 28 to Franklin then Wayah Rd. (it's off 64W) back to 74/129. And a bigger loop, take the BRP to 215. South to 64W then north on 281 back to Sylva. That's almost two days worth.

Thanks. I'm going to lay out some routes on my Mapsource software using Ken's routes as a guide, and put those on my GPS. If I get too far off course, I'll just use my GPS to get me back to Robbinsville.

OUT

Just checked with the guy doing the surgery to remove the cataract from my right eye. He isn't flexible in his schedule and I have to see him on the Friday of START.

I could wait two months for the next opening on his surgery schedule but Nancy and I will be at the beach with our kids and grand kids that time frame.

Aggravated but will get over it.

At least I will have better vision. The left eye was done a couple of months ago and I have 20/20 uncorrected in that eye.

We will miss you - I would stay home too if I could get back to 20/20 vision.

Thanks Bob. I was so looking forward to spending more time with friends that I met at Boone.

PS I haven't dropped my bike since then.

Good luck with your second eye operations, Bud. And don't feel to bad, I will not be able to make the event either, OUT due to family obligations. Hopefully I can make the FALL Event.

See you guys later.

Can I borrow the RT if my drive shaft isn't ready?

Jinxed myself. :dopeslap:

Turns out I have a Macular Pucker in my left eye and have to see a retina specialist next Thursday to find out what it may mean for my sight.

Thanks for the kind words.

I always expect the best and know that the retina guy in St. Louis is one of the best in the nation and it will turn out well.

Hope to see you all sometime on the road this year!

Room mate needed, I have a double queen room. After spending $850 on my wife's bike I could use some financial relief!

You rather have me say no to my 7 year old granddaughter?

I don't have that much courage.

We passed through Tellico Plains yesterday, and I'm sorry to report that Tellico Motorcycle Outfitters has gone out of business. Their former retail space is empty, with a "for rent" sign in the window.

On a more positive note, the Tellico Grains bakery/cafe in "downtown" Tellico is the place to eat. The Tellicafe (behind the BP station) used to be one of my favorite spots in the area, but their menu has slipped a lot. Tellico Grains bakes all their own breads/pastries, and they serve terrific sandwiches.

+1 We need to support and keep them in business!

The building is historical and used to be a Bank (still have a walk in vault used as a storage room). They use wood burning brick ovens for the breads.

Room mate found!

I will be stopping at Tellico grains on Thursday around 12:15pm EST with two in tow. Anyone who wants to meet us there for lunch is welcome.

+1 for Kats Deli, I usually stop there and she makes a great sandwich. Plus you get to sit beside the river and eat.

I have stopped at Kats 3 times this winter since the grains was closed for the season. They have good food also!

Glenn

I'm the roomie who had to bow out on Glenn. Lower back problems that developed several weeks ago continued to worsen in spite of heavy doses of muscle relaxants and NSAIDS. Finally went the other day to the surgeon who operated on my back 5 1/2 years ago and he found scoliosis of the lower lumbar region had recently developed. He couldn't say whether lower back problems had caused the scoliosis or vice versa. So the options were series of steroid injections or surgery with rods & screws. Decided to try the conservative (injection) route first.

I'm going to miss seeing everyone, especially after a very long, somewhat rideless winter. Stay safe everyone and hope to see you all again soon.

Sorry to hear this. We will all miss you - health and timing are everything! If the back was going to act up it should have done so at the beginning of the winter season not when the weather is finally allowing some saddle time. :)

So sorry to hear. Back pain can be very difficult to treat and/or manage. I hope the injections do the job for you!

Cant wait to see you regularly at more events. Since you cant come to START, please check out B5Q - Beemers, Blues, Brews, & BBQ ... a nice event up on the top of the mountain at Snowshoe WV. Maybe we could see you there.

Sorry, but I won't be there on the 25th. I had a major accident on the other bike. My wife canceled the reservation yesterday. Have fun and ride safe.

Thanks Craig. We enjoyed RCR in 2012 even though it was for the one night. We did go up on top with Jake and have a nice cup of coffee at Starbucks. Beautiful little "Village" they have. Riding will be slim this year though and I have a family reunion in VT the same time as B5Q.

Maybe next year.
