Cars..

There's a section at AdvRider called Shiny Things and I've found myself spending more and more time there, particularly in the Porsche and MB threads (and Jeeps and RV's) as I've been involved with German cars in one form or another most of my life. So therein lies my interest but I thought a thread about cars in general, classic or otherwise could be viable, I know a few here that have/had some interesting ones. I'd like to see and hear about em as I'm sure would others.

I'll start with a video that's a bit long at 30 min, the guy's a little goofy (funny)  though interesting, pretty good with a camera, and captures some nice Euro scenery. With some Zen and the art of old sportscar maintenance thrown in. It reminded me a little bit of Josh and his journey up and down the West coast recently (except different) and myself back in the day on similar trips to far off places procuring some old P-car or Benz I wasn't sure would get me home (a few didn't).

I'll play. (We don't have to stick to autos from the Fatherland, right?)

In the garage right now is this beauty (the car!)

It's been in the family since my great grandmother bought it off the lot (fun family story there as my great grandfather was working at the Ford dealer then... {in case you're not up on 50s' autos, this is a Plymouth}) - only two registered owners and 41,000 miles in just about 70 years.

If someone is looking for an epic fly and drive it's currently available ;)

I've had a couple things along the way I thought were fun, but I certainly can't compete with your list Bill - I'll see if I can find some pics, though, of what I have had...

That's a great old car Josh and appears amazingly well preserved. Clean it up put a hubcap on it and stick it on Craigslist, you might be surprised at the results (after weeding out the scammers and bozos). Car collectors usually scan CG looking for the occasional deal to pop up but they also know the value of an original well kept piece.

Another place is Bring a Trailer (BaT), granted the majority of stuff is European but there's a good bit of American and some Japanese cars too. Originality is highly regarded there and the guys that run the place really know cars but it's a bit more work on your part, the followers (and there are plenty) are accustomed to seeing well documented history and lots of detailed photos. The upside is the possibility of getting all the money and then some for it.

Mostly unloved ... even called the clownshoe in some circles .... but still turns heads and is a fun car to drive.

You're right Chris the coupes have been unloved in the past but I think that's changing. The M version is starting to outpace it's roadster counterpart, nice ones have been escalating into uncharted territory lately which means the standard version (if that's what yours is) will likely follow. Btw, nice wheels. They are definitely a fun car, I've got an '01 roadster and really enjoy driving it, it's reminiscent of a classic but with modern abilities. There were a lot of roadsters made so there's plenty of them around at (I think) bargain prices, coupes are far rarer.

Much to wife’s chagrin (although she was a track bracket champion “back in the day”) I’ve been a drag racer since I was 16, this is the current ride.  I really enjoy track days at different road courses (turn 12 at Road Atlanta is a hoot) but don’t have a track car currently but on the lookout for a E30 325is. In any case drag racing has always been a huge adrenaline rush for me, particularly when I can win some $$$. Suppose it’s like riding, only going to give it up when absolutely necessary but it will always bring great memories of friendships made pursuing a common passion.

I'll have you fellas know I own exactly zero of the cars mentioned in this thread so far (Mr. Olson's is completely different).

Besides it’s just some old hi mileage German iron nobody else wants, why I do remains a mystery.

Good stuff Jim (more pics are always welcome) you and Dougie I'm sure could collaborate on the drag racing scene, I know he had some cool stuff too (and a slew of trophies). C'mon Doug dig out some of those old black and whites : )

Edit, Jim is turn 12 the bridge or start/finish? I remember 7,8,9,and 10 but haven't driven there since they took the dip out which has been awhile. Personally I liked 6 because it's banked and you could pitch the car a little sideways before straightening out for 7, R/A really is one of the all time great road courses.

Heck yeah Larry I was hoping you'd show us that old girl. I forget the particulars, something about an LT1 and 6sp auto? Forgive me I'm not that up on the 'Merican vernaculars : )

12 is at the bottom of the hill, have seen more than one early apex and hit the concrete there. I always set up for twelve using a tree seen above the bridge and then held on.  Terry Earwood told me he drove the track when the back straight fed directly to that turn...that would be intense for sure. What a rush...  Anybody who has never been on a track should investigate track days and show up with pants and helmet because instructors give rides occasionally.  You will be hooked, guaranteed. Shouldn’t encourage me on my drag cars...might not be able to stop.

The TR6 was the first car that caught my eye as a ten year old kid. Matter fact, I remember exactly where I was when I saw it. Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester Ma. They blew it with the 7 IMO. Never did goe that route but had a couple years of sweet dreams over it.

Thanks - I was out on the bike and the Volvo caught my eye - spoke to the owner........it was based on a civilian car and modded to fit the purpose.......at the time relations between Finland and Russia were very tense and these were used to keep an eye on those pesky ruskies!!

The Bristol is a beauty too.....a 405 drophead coupe......some more info.......

The owner was down the road watching a game of cricket and I spent a few mins chatting to him about the car - he'd had it for over 30 yrs!!

Even more interesting, love chatting with long time owners of their cars, always something to learn. I've owned just one British car but am pretty sure my Dad instilled the car bug in me at an early age. When I was 2 he flew to NY and picked up an XK120 off the first boat from England and drove it back to central Florida, silver with red Connolly leather I can still remember the smell of it, very nice.

By the early 70's I was a German car guy and restoring 356's and a few 911's. My everyday car tho was a '63 220SE finback, a guy I knew liked it enough to trade me his burg/tan  '67 4.2L E type conv. I never completely acclimated to it as impressive as it was, the hood went on forever and seemed like it was all engine, acceleration was brutal for the day. I ended up trading it for an FWD Eldorado conv, amazingly the three cars were all worth the same amount then : )

See the source image

Oddly enough a Z3 reminds me of driving the E with the long hood, center bulge, and burble/wail of a twin cam six. Albeit on a smaller scale.

My work truck now only used for shows and cruising around, and the wife’s Chevy SSR, great for traveling and road trips for two!

Here is my '26 Model T, restored by an Uncle about 20 years ago.  I technically own it but really i am the current care taker of it until i pass it down to the next generation when i can no longer handle it.  It's a runner and is good for short trips around the neighborhood.

The red engine below is my 1914 Associated Chore Boy. 1 3/4 hp, hit and miss with make-and-break ignition.  It runs at 450 RPM and will only fire 17 times in a minute.

The green engine is a 1920 6 hp Fairbanks Morse, it weighs in at 600 pounds, the piston and connecting rod weight 22 pounds alone.

Great stuff Steve and Jim love the three M3 generations, too cool. I posted this on Adv last week, thought I'd link it here. Ok it's another old 911 story but we were talking about street driven race cars in the Right Now thread which was kind of interesting..

  1. When I found some old car pics a few weeks ago this little booklet was in among them. It was put out by Porsche in the late 60's I guess to educate their customers and generate some interest in racing. Figured I’d wait awhile then tell a story about the car on the cover and the guy driving it.

    5AC36AF8-94E8-4229-BA79-8E6C03ECE63B.jpeg

Today I came across a video of the car and it’s current owner.

In the mid 80’s I was at the Miami Grand Prix with the 910 doing the vintage race as part of the weekend. A dapper gent walked up and said, I used to have one of those. I go, Really! He says I’m Fred Baker I raced a Carrera 6 when they were new and Dick Smothers was my co-driver at the 12 Hours. I told him it was a 910 but he was close enough..

Long story short we went to dinner that night and he came back Sunday for the race and gave me some pointers. For the next couple years he’d go to some of the Fla races with me and imparted a good deal of his racing knowledge especially with the 2.5 911. And more crazy stories than I can remember. His father owned Tonka Toys, basically he had unlimited funds, went racing and hung around with Newman, Garner, Penske, Dick Smothers, etc. We’ve lost touch over the years but I hope he’s still doing ok.

When this video of his 911 popped up I figured it was a sign.

Did a couple of these in the 80s and early 90s.  This '67 was my daily driver - work on it at night so I could drive to work the next day:

Sadly, no.  Sold it to an E500 forum friend from Norway.  Sent me a photo of him driving it in 8* temp.  Was an enjoyable 245K miles.

I bet it was. Would that thing light up the rear tires, It was sort of the forerunner of the AMG cars.

The ASR would first bog the engine down and then engage the rear brakes if you got on it too hard.  Had to ride the throttle to keep the rear tires just chirping.

They just don’t want you to have any darn fun, although on later cars I think you could turn that stuff off.

Sweet music, I had a few modified oldies like that long before Singer came along then a couple of the racing versions. Air-cooled motors sound pretty good uncorked but can't compete with 4 cams and higher revs of the newer stuff. This is obviously a promotion but a look at the latest rendition of the RSR.. Enjoy it while you can Porsches will be part or all electric within ten years.
