yes

it's amazing how many motorcyclists don't wear them....

deafness is irreversible and 100% inevitable if you don't wear them if you ride even a few miles a week

Because of engine noise? Do they allow you to still hear vehicles?

Because of wind noise - especially in full helmets. Noise levels in helmets are typically over 110 dBA whilst riding at 70MPH or higher. The deafness is guaranteed, after that you will never hear another vehicle. In normal useage they allow sounds to be heard that would be masked by wind noise.

Rely on your eyes, not your ears, to monitor other traffic.

BTW, in the UK digital hearing aids run at 1300 pounds a side, custom moulded ear plugs 45 pounds a pair.

The accessory - 12 volt kettle to make the tea on the road grin.gif

Because of wind turbulence... even low-freq turbulence makes damaging noise.

Better gear. (usually pants. most of us wear good helmet, jacket and gloves. pants and/or good boots seem to always be last)

anonymous book

ear plugs,

better quality tool kit

small electric air pump, with BMW accessory plug as power source

attend Riding schools

these items all take up about 0 space, and even if you do not want to fix a flat, if someone comes along (before your roadside assistance does) and they are handy, you have the tools.

No, wind noise/buffeting. Its so quiet wearing properly inserted ear plugs, you can hardly hear the engine.

Take a ride with a set of properly inserted foam ear plugs and then take a ride without them. You'll note the difference, unless you're deaf.

I've been wearing those yellow foam EAR-brand plugs since I started flying as a flight instructor in 1980. There is nothing noisier than a light aircraft.

Pilots have air-to-air refueling, what I would give. . .

They also have toilets on board, what I would give....

Maybe not ALL, but some of use could use...

Downloadable BMW dealer listings (for your PDA) and GPS co-ordinates (for your GPS) for any country that you ride in.

Apparently, BMW hasn't heard about the electronic age yet.

Agreed. Of all the things that can strand you on the road, a flat tire is the #1 most easy fix. No air and plugs = no fix.

Hey David,

Thanks to your input, I've installed 4 of them. Wow, you should see those deer run away.

Thanks again for the info. thumbsup.gif

Believe it or not you actually see those things around here (OK, usually not on bikes), but in order to be respected forget the chrome... they have to be real. Looks great on your pickup, maybe also on a 1200RT?

Greg, someone's borrowed my bike and I don't have a picture at the moment, but here's a link to more info about them:

i checked out that link

which of those did YOU get?

i suppose that the model V-135 is a bit much to spend

or does it make THAT much of a difference?

NOT getting killed by a deer is worth a lot more, of course

You guys are killing me... grin.gif

Believe it or not, a riding friend of mine actually has a set of these (not chrome) mounted, of all places, on one of his HELMETS!! eek.gif

Anyway, my vote for most needed accessory would have to be an IDIOT DETECTOR!! That way I would be warned when they're going to do something to jeopardize me and my ride! grin.gif

The first step would be to look for the giant steer horns on their helmet.

Sunblocker, original or cheap knock-off, on your face shield. Can't believe I rode for years without such a thing - wouldn't do without it, now.

Russell,

I'm not sure that all idiots wear horns on their helmets. Who knows, they may even look almost normal. Those are the ones you have to watch out for. grin.gif

Darn. Russell went ahead and spoiled all the fun I was having. smile.gif

Greg, no deer whistles work. What you just got was "initiated." tongue.gif

At least we didn't give you a weird haircut. grin.gif

Thanks for being a good sport, by the way. And you owe Russell a beer for interrupting our fun. Otherwise you might have bought them, installed them, posted a picture, and THEN found out. tongue.gif

i WILL buy russell that beer

i'm sure that Marty would love to have put these:

on MY helmet!

I should wish to obtain the device that automatically raises and lowers the windshield as related to speed.

....and possibly the voice control (speech recognition) option for the sound/intercom (Autocom) system that allows hands free activation of various electrical accessories such as lights, heated grips, etc.

...and finally, the electronically generated, multipurpose, sound generator which permits the generation of various (loud?) motorcycle sounds, including loud bad boy bike (adjustable features), fast sewing machine, screaming eagle, hip-hop homeboy beat and anti-deer whistle.

This thread reminds me of a gag we pulled in college.

Got a big bowl of "Life" cereal and put it in the lounge of our dorm floor. Put a sign on it that said "Life - Please take one".

I actually saw a HD with one of those at Bike Night last week. Only exception is that the ones on the HD were bigger, yes bigger, if you can believe that. Yikes.

now, THAT'S one accessory we've ALL needed at one time or anther on the road

there's only 2 kind of folks in this world (who've ridden thousans of miles) when it comes to admitting a "problem" on the road

- those who've had the problem and freely admit it

- those who say they haven't... and are lying

What's REALLY disturbing is that we were just discussing this very item today at the Tech Daze. (The chromed longhorns...)

Jamie and I were figuring out how best to mount one across the front of an RT...

Hehehe...

MY vote for best unsung upgrade?

That would have to be a rear (or sidecar) mounted manned 50 caliber machine gun (Rat Patrol style) to clear some of the SUV infestation on our freeways...

Kinda like this fella:

Not downloadable, but I found this list
