ClearwaterBMW
yes it's amazing how many motorcyclists don't wear them.... deafness is irreversible and 100% inevitable if you don't wear them if you ride even a few miles a week greg Link to comment
Tschamp
Because of engine noise? Do they allow you to still hear vehicles? Link to comment
Boffin
Because of engine noise? Do they allow you to still hear vehicles? Because of wind noise - especially in full helmets. Noise levels in helmets are typically over 110 dBA whilst riding at 70MPH or higher. The deafness is guaranteed, after that you will never hear another vehicle. In normal useage they allow sounds to be heard that would be masked by wind noise. Rely on your eyes, not your ears, to monitor other traffic. BTW, in the UK digital hearing aids run at 1300 pounds a side, custom moulded ear plugs 45 pounds a pair. The accessory - 12 volt kettle to make the tea on the road Cya, Andy (Deaf in one ear due to hereditary problem) Link to comment
Tool
Because of engine noise? Do they allow you to still hear vehicles? Because of wind turbulence... even low-freq turbulence makes damaging noise. Link to comment

randy
Better gear. (usually pants. most of us wear good helmet, jacket and gloves. pants and/or good boots seem to always be last) anonymous book ear plugs, better quality tool kit small electric air pump, with BMW accessory plug as power source attend Riding schools these items all take up about 0 space, and even if you do not want to fix a flat, if someone comes along (before your roadside assistance does) and they are handy, you have the tools. Global_Rider
Because of engine noise? No, wind noise/buffeting. Its so quiet wearing properly inserted ear plugs, you can hardly hear the engine. Take a ride with a set of properly inserted foam ear plugs and then take a ride without them. You'll note the difference, unless you're deaf. I've been wearing those yellow foam EAR-brand plugs since I started flying as a flight instructor in 1980. There is nothing noisier than a light aircraft. Link to comment

Global_Rider
so...... what accessory should we ALL have that we may NOT know about? Maybe not ALL, but some of use could use... Downloadable BMW dealer listings (for your PDA) and GPS co-ordinates (for your GPS) for any country that you ride in. Apparently, BMW hasn't heard about the electronic age yet. Link to comment
skinny_tom (aka boney)
small electric air pump, with BMW accessory plug as power source Agreed. Of all the things that can strand you on the road, a flat tire is the #1 most easy fix. No air and plugs = no fix. Link to comment

Blake
Believe it or not, a riding friend of mine actually has a set of these (not chrome) mounted, of all places, on one of his HELMETS!! Anyway, my vote for most needed accessory would have to be an IDIOT DETECTOR!! That way I would be warned when they're going to do something to jeopardize me and my ride! Link to comment

Marty Hill
Russell, I'm not sure that all idiots wear horns on their helmets. Who knows, they may even look almost normal. Those are the ones you have to watch out for. Link to comment

Gregori
What's REALLY disturbing is that we were just discussing this very item today at the Tech Daze. (The chromed longhorns...) Jamie and I were figuring out how best to mount one across the front of an RT... Hehehe... MY vote for best unsung upgrade? That would have to be a rear (or sidecar) mounted manned 50 caliber machine gun (Rat Patrol style) to clear some of the SUV infestation on our freeways... Kinda like this fella: G Link to comment
