The Two Day Ride to Torrey.

So we can visit the North Rim.

I stopped at the Marble Canyon Lodge  on my way to Texas Wednesday. The coffee was good and the apple pie  fresh. I asked about room availability for Thursday, May 19 and wound up getting a block of 5 rooms  reserved. Five was a Stupid Wild Ass Guess and may be inaccurate. They had several other rooms available if five is not enough, so we should  reserve our rooms quickly. The road up Marble Canyon to Lee's Ferry is right around the corner from the Lodge. Should be a good place to be when the sun sets.

Schemes and Dreams are to meet on Thursday, May 19, somewhere near St. George and ride to the North Rim. There's no appreciable food in the North Rim. I usually  bring a deli sandwich and something to drink to the park and then find a picnic table with a view. Thursday night will be at Marble Canyon Lodge. Day 2 is riding to Torrey by way of the Moki Dugway. Both days will be long and tiring.

Hey, Dennis, could you send me a Google Maps link to the route you have in mind, please?

First day. The distance, 225 miles., doesn't look like all that much but 3/4 of it is twisty stuff.

Part one of day two. Tuba City to Kayenta and beyond are Indian lands. Masks are required. I'm looking forward to seeing Kayenta again.

If anyone is looking for lodging, I just booked on Motel Torrey's website and got a 25% discount for reserving two nights; total was $249.

The Chuckwagon is BMWST Torrey Central, but there are other places if it's full. (and it usually is...)

What is a good place and time to meet up on Thursday?

I suggested bringing a Deli sandwich and eating in the North Rim. As much as I'd love to do that St. George isn't the most convenient place for something like that. Let me look around further this weekend for something in Hurricane. We could eat at the restaurant at Jacob Lake if ya'll would rather do that. @BrianT should chime in on food.

I just had a brain fart about  where to get food. Maybe all of us can meet there. I'll post back after I check it out.

I found a friend of Ed's who is going to Torrey with us. Michael, Ed and I rode to the North Rim on the day it opened last year. Michael will be waiting for us in the parking lot  of this Park on Thursday morning. He's riding a Ninja 1000SX.

Considering my want to stop at a deli I'd like to be all together in Hurricane around 9:00 AM Thursday.  But, what time are ya'll willing to kick the stands up? For normal people Mesquite is 45 minutes from St. George. Hurricane is half an hour further on. It would be best to leave Hurricane no later than 10:00 AM, which should get us Jacob Lake before noon.

I had to put my dog down this week. I really need a good ride with friends.

So the parking lot of the Hurricane Valley Heritage Park about 9 am local time?

To be honest, I'm an early riser, so whatever time works for everyone will work for me as well. Same goes for food choices.

I'm good with either one, deli sandwiches or Jacob Lake restaurant.  So, I got the plan of be at Hurricane Valley Heritage Park Thur at 9 am mountain time.  Mesquite isn't great on deli's or sandwich shops in the morning either.  So just let me know if the plan is to pickup lunch in Hurricane after we meet up at the park or if I need to pickup something Weds night and keep it on ice in the hotel room for Thur.

The parking lot of the Hurricane Valley Heritage Park, 35 State St, Hurricane, UT 84737, Thursday about 9 am local time,  sounds like a plan!

Any rooms left in the block reserved for Marble Canyon Lodge?

I haven't been keeping track but I think there's at least one. I need to call them tomorrow anyway. I'll check and post back.

Some of us are bypassing Mesquite and staying Wednesday night in Hurricane. It’s an hour longer drive but we get more time in the morning.

I'm currently booked into the Days Inn for 2 nights in Torrey. If anyone has an extra room, or wants to split a room, please let me know. I'd rather stay at BMWST Central if possible.

You're new. To avoid assumptions I'll be up front: This is not an easy ride. The tar snakes are a new world standard and the road is twisty. And that's the easy part. Day 2 is six or seven hours of hard riding. None of us are slow. We look forward to riding with you.

The big red dot is the parking to meet at.
Underlined in red:
Lin's Market. They'll have meat and cheese platters and good stuff to drink.
Subway. It may be that they don't fix sandwiches that early in the day. I don't know.
The red arrow: Main Street Cafe. Probably the only place in Hurricane that isn't swarmed by tourists. If you're staying nearby consider it for breakfast.

Jacob Lake has a food truck parked outside. It could be a fallback

Thanks Dennis for doing the organization, looks to be a spirited 600+ mile whirlwind of a ride.

I'm slow... can I join in?

Tar Snakes suck. I thought they were Chipmunks  the first time.  You might consider THIS

260 the first day isn't too much. 360 the next day is a bit longer esp. with Moki Dugway, though not a big deal.

Yes, it can be 'fast' open type riding. And maybe no deer...

Very doable days. More of a challenge would be to do it in one.

Jim, you remember AZ in April... 2300 miles for the week with sightseeing and a tour of a cement plant; you will not have any problem. :read:

I appreciate the honesty. I'm not going to ride over my head. On the 7 day Arizona ride I rode an R1200RT through a couple of tight twisty mountain sections full of tar snakes and loose gravel. Short day was 220miles - lots of twisties. Couple days of 380-420 miles. So not a total noob. I've got hotel reservations and directions. Don't worry about waiting for me.  If I can have adult beverage with the guys after riding, I'm good.

Oh, lest I forget. Part of Day 2 will be on Indian lands. They require masks. They are anal about masks.

Other than that it's a beautiful place with considerable unrecognized talent.

You'll be fine.

Tar snakes are not that scary as long as you relax and ride at a comfortable pace.
