Sand warning

Even though the weather is warming up, the sand from the snowy winter is still gathered in the white line and fog line areas of the roads above 2500 feet here in Calif.

While pulling out of my driveway and crossing the center line while turning into the lane I got a real good adrenaline rush last night as the bike unexpectedly switched positions a few inches as I crossed. It's hard to see light sand in the road...just be aware and be cautious.

This year it's been really bad up here, too. The road dept has started using some type of pea gravel on the ice that looks like ball bearings and feels like them too. Usually the state guys are road sweeping this stuff up, but this year for some reason windrows of it are all over turnouts and even middle of the lanes. Since the rock is gray, it really blends into the asphalt and is difficult to see. Safest place to be is in one of the wheel tracks.
