fall reading list intro

We’ve always used this section to showcase specific adventure motorcycling books. But with the influx of so many new ones, and the time separate reviews require, we’d never get to them all. Instead, we’re going to showcase several in order to help get the word out. All of the following are available on Kindle except “Rice and Dirt,” which is currently in paperback only.

Rice and Dirt coverTitle: Rice and Dirt: Across Africa on a Vespa

Author: Alexandra Fefopoulou and Stergios Gogos

We’re big fans of the “whatever bike you have will do” philosophy. And if anything smacks of adventure, it’s got to be riding/dragging a vintage Vespa across the Dark Content. I’m most of the way through this book and have been thoroughly enjoying it. There’s a lot to like about this story, it’s a casual read, the ride is on a tight budget and the authors impart one heck of a lot of useful information for those who may want to follow a similar route.

Available in paperback only via WorldVespa.net: | $12.50

Crash Landing coverTitle: Crash Landing: The Long Road Home

Author: Liz Jansen

Liz is a natural seeker and this work is somewhat of a mission for her, rather than simply a long ride. The title, Crash Landing, is literal, as the story is written around a motorcycle crash in northern Alberta, Canada. For some time Liz has been chasing her roots to better understand her family’s past as Russian Mennonite immigrants. Something she continues to do to this day. If you’ve been around our community, you’ll almost certainly have met or at least seen her. She’s an avid North American rider who has thoroughly cross-crossed the continent. If you enjoystories written from a personal and spiritual perspective, then I highly recommend Crash Landing. Liz is also the author of other related books and frequently blogs.

Available in paperback and Kindle via Amazon | $19.29 or $5.99

Tales from South America coverTitle: Tales from South America: Everyday Life, Legends and People

Author: Egle Gerulaityte

Egle is a long-time contributor to ADVMoto. She’s a unique and original writer who has deep insight. In other words, you can’t miss with this one. Although Tales is currently on my knee-deep reading list, I’ve perused it for evaluation and am looking forward to lunging in. Egle has been meandering around parts of the world, scratching out a living as a writer/contributor to various publications, blogs and vlogs. She’s insightful and never fails to entertain. Tales from South America is sure to be a good read.

Available in paperback or Kindle via Amazon | $12.99 or $9.00

Hellbent for Paradise coverTitle: Hellbent for Paradise: Tales from Aotearoa—Land of the Long White Cloud

Author: Zoë Cano

Zoë is a published author of several books and a consummate adventurer. Her travels are well documented and receive excellent reviews. Aotearoa is a much-sought-after destination in New Zealand, the setting of this book and the author’s 5,000 km ride. Zoë’s prosy style spins an extremely readable yarn of an all but unknown area of the planet that that once more riders become aware of they’ll surely add it to their destination bucket list. And, Hellbent is loaded with excellent quality B&W photography (my personal fave).

Available in paperback or Kindle via Amazon | $22.62 or $9.99

Two Wheels South coverTitle: Two Wheels South—A Motorcycle Adventure from Brooklyn to Ushuaia

Author: Matias Corea

Matias moved to New York City in 2002 to focus on his career, but after a loss in the family he decided to put his life on new tracks. Joined by Joel, a high-school buddy from Barcelona, they took a great adventure south from the Big Apple to Ushuaia.  This 270 page hardback book is filled with wonderful images, honest reflections and important lessons learned. Although not a “how-to” book, anyone planning a similar ride would find Two Wheels South not only entertaining but informative.

MotorcycleTravelerCoverStarr coverTitle: Motorcycle Traveler—12 Countries, 6 years and a Lifetime of Experiences

Peter Starr’s legacy in the world of motorcycle media is astounding. He was one of the first ever to share the thrills of road racing from a first person perspective by installing onboard film cameras and microphones to road race bikes in the 70’s. Some 50 years later Peter is still at it having just released Motorcycle Traveler, a nearly 300 page book loaded with images and impressions from motorcycle travel around the world. His adventure travel exploits include a wide spectrum of cultures ranging from Asia/Australia to South America and many countries in between.
