I've got a 96 R1100RT that does this and I'd like to get more information about it. However, all I've found so far is threads the mention it, but don't actually go into any details about it. smiller Posted April 20, 2006 Share Posted April 20, 2006 Common problem with early (pre-M97) oilhead transmissions. Caused by premature shift fork wear due to design & production tolerance issues. Some design changes were made in the mid-97 model year to help cure. BMW issued a service bulletin covering this problem with upgraded repair parts but I believe that these are no longer available.
