Neutral warning light

Went for a nice long ride today and at one junction slipped the bike into 1st gear and the neutral light came on. The RID panel showed the correct gear ( 1st ). The neutral light comes on in neutral , as it should , and goes out in ALL the other gear positions. It now comes on every time 1st is selected.

This is the first time this has happened and am wondering why. Has it happened to anyone else?.

Bike is a 1997 R1100RT by the way.

Afternoon David

If the neutral indicator light (it isn't a warning light) comes on in 1st & neutral then most likely it is the switch. The switch might be loose on the trans, or the contacts might be worn, or the switch is just getting loose inside.

If it isn't the switch itself then possibly the shift selector drum is not traveling enough when shifted into 1st. (worn trans shift parts)

Or, possibly the foot shift lever to trans linkage is loose & not allowing the trans to FULLY engage 1st gear. (for this check the trans shift linkage for being tight on the trans stub shaft splines & check the foot lever for a loose pivot bolt)

just been for a ride and light now works as it should. Seems odd but bike still runs perfect so not worried.
