daveyboy27uk
Yesterday I managed to kill the clutch (and maybe the gearbox in one of my old boxers (R100RS) How long should it take me to replace the gearbox and clutch and how difficult a job is it likely to be, i've got limited mechanical knowledge (well actually i've got limited knowledge full stop!!!) and does any one have any handy hints to stop me ballsing it up, i've got the Haynes Manual and clymer one but would appreciate any feedback, cheers Link to comment
ShovelStrokeEd
The clutch isn't too bad. Follow the directions in the manuals and take your time. You might need to support the frame once the rear wheel is off. Most guys use a strap from a ceiling beam. If I remember right, I haven't rolled around under one of those for some time, the center stand is bolted to the transmission case. The transmission is a little intimidating as you have to have some special tools. Better to leave it to a dealer. I think Bob's BMW offers a transmission rebuilding service. Link to comment

Bob Palin
Search this site for "Spline Lube" and you will find several threads regarding disassembly of the bike to get you started. Will they help with an R100? Bob's BMW is a long way to send a transmission, he's probably in the UK given his use of "ballsing up" and that the last 2 letters of his user name are UK. Edgar
You did say that this is an R100 right? If you would fill out your bio. Clutch replacement on R100 series is a lot easier than the R1100 series as there are far fewer components to remove. It is straight forward, and for the backyard mechanic, a day would do it. In general, the manuals are a good resource and if you’re methodical and take your time you should do OK. The recommended interval for the airheads spine lubes is 30K, using the red BMW grease. As always having the clutch alignment tool makes the job a lot easier for someone that hasn’t seen a clutch before. Link to comment
ShovelStrokeEd
I missed that! Might be good to find a breaker and purchase another gearbox. Surely there are dealers that can offer the same services in the UK? Link to comment
Boffin
I missed that! Might be good to find a breaker and purchase another gearbox. Surely there are dealers that can offer the same services in the UK? James Sherlock in Exeter is an excelent independant BMW specialist, Motobins and Motorworks are great parts and info resources. Here is Motobins reconditioning and exchange gearbox charges. Fill in a few more details in your profile and it will be easier for us to offer help and advice. Cya, Andy Link to comment
