I'm Trying to Add Extrra Stop Light to STd Top Case....

I got a reasonably cheap top case with my 2014 R1200RT.

Do not really need internal light or central locking, but want the extra stop light.

Also do not want to buy loaded top case and resell my std one, so....

Wired the std top case this afternoon and ordered the extra tail light.

Checked the CANBUS plug and I am very sure I know which wires do what.

Will tap the two wires of interest, put in a plug and try it out.

Will then get BMW to update the computer.

Will tell you how I go.

Good luck with a little project. I don't believe you will need the computer flashed, those lines tie into the brake light lines which I hope are active :)

Depends on the current draw of the added light. LED lights will not affect the system. I am adding a light to my top box as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Got it all connected today and works beautifully.

When you look at the bike connector under the seat, with the red tab at the bottom,

the first connection at about 4 o'clock is earth.

the second connection at about 5 o'clock is the LED power. It sits at about 8V and goes to about 12V when the brake is pressed.

The LED light Black wire is Power.

The LED light brown wire is Earth.

I guessed wrong and then swapped the connections at the bike and it worked.

When you take the black topbox light housing off, the centre is attached by three plastics expanding rivets.

To remove them, press through the centre hole and the expander will be pushed out.

Assembly is pretty easy to work out. I will take some pics at the weekend of how it assembles and also publish the wire colours for posterity.

I made up my own waterproof connectors etc.

My top box has the wires already installed under where the brake light fits.

The Brown wire is earth.

Here is a picture of the brake light mount with the 3 rivets removed
