R1100RT Triangular Cover

I am curious about the triangular left side cover on my 1996 RT. Its front corner sticks out a little, and has resisted my attempts to chastise it. The little locating tab is present, and appears not to be deformed so I think the whole piece may have become warped somehow, causing the lower front portion to stick out, popping the tab from the slot in the Big Plastic. The machine is in my unheated garage, and since it arrived a month ago our temps have seldom risen above single digits above zero, Fahrenheit. Do these panels have reputations for warping in cold temps? If so, do they return to proper shape when they warm, or do they need to be heated and reformed?

The right side panel appears to fit properly.

Morning Fred

Those covers are not known for warping but that doesn't mean yours isn't.

The most common thing I have seen with those covers is one of the tabs breaking off. Maybe yours HAD a broken tab & someone glued it back on or made an incorrect repair.

Probably the best way that we can help you with this is for you to take some pictures then post them here.

A picture of the cover installed & sticking out, as well as a picture of the BACK of the cover showing the tabs, then another picture of the frame where the cover mounts up.

Maybe we can spot the problem.

+1 the photos will help a lot.

My left-side cover didn't fit well but with some silicone on the rubber grommet in the fairing it would fit.

Eventually I realized the the hole in the plastic body was mis-registered, relative to the other pieces--left footrest plate, twist-lock screw and lifting handle. I bores the hole in the body panel so that the grommet would slide to the rear about 3/32" and presto, the parts fit perfectly.

Early RT's (1996-???) didn't have the hole or the grommet. The black plastic piece was missing the pin shaped part too.

Well, with adequate light out there, and actually focusing on the situation at hand, maybe I found the cause. When I run my finger in the gap between the upper and lower panels it seems the left side has a slightly larger gap than the right side. Maybe as much as 3/16 or 1/4" wider. It doesn't seem the lower panel can be raised that much but perhaps the upper panel can come down a little? Here are some pictures, see what you think:

Detail of the panel joint. This side has a slightly wider groove than the joint on the right side. With the foot peg mount can the lower body panel be raised?

From the pictures it appears that you're right. I got fooled by the max BMW parts fiche which shows the same part numbers for 1100 and 1150, including the rubber grommet.

I can't tell much from the pictures except the upper tupperware (shown in your lower picture) doesn't appear to have the attachment screws centered in the screw depressions.

You might compare the screw head position within the depressions to the other side & if the problem side doesn't match then loosen ALL the screws on the problem side, then try to re-position the upper tupperware panel to be a bit more rearward.

That's a clue; Thanks. When I set the lower locating tabs in their slots the Dzus fastener at the top does not fit in its hole so that makes sense. I had not thought of relocating the upper panel, just the lower. And that piece has the foot peg mount sorta making a positive location so I wasn't sure just how to adjust it...

Are those four part numbers? I'm guessing "absorbers" are rubber ovals which go around the tabs to keep them from rattling in their slots. There are no such gadgets, and they may be good to have, thanks.

The absorbers fit over the 'tabs' that stick out at the bottom of the side panels. Go to Maxbmw website, in parts fiche look for diagram 51-4471 for your bike, item 5 in the diagram.

Part # 5253 2313 447 (that is one single part #)

When my original "absorbers" perished I was unable to get replacements from my BMW dealer.

I ended up with a roll of self adhesive foam backed tape from which I cut enough to go around each tab and provide a small "shoulder" inside and out.

This has worked perfectly for two or three years now and shows no sign of deterioration...
