not sure about the top but the bottom is the BMW power outlet. 12 volt plug that takes a special outlet adapter. the bottom one looks just like the one below the seat on my RT

Bottom one is the standard electrical outlet installed on R1100S: it may look a bit tacky but it's a factory part hence big $$$/£££/€€€.

The top one is positive jumper post to allow you to jump start the bike without dismantling the bike: I think BMW started installing it on Oilheads after 1999 but can be retrofit to older bikes as well. Parts for the conversion are about 25€ from BMW.

Morning Marty

The upper picture is of the remote jumper cable attachment post.

The lower picture appears to be of a BMW 12v power outlet.

This thread might help explain it a bit more.

Be somewhat careful around that uncovered post as it is 12v UNFUSED & has a very high amp capability.

As DR says. This was (IMHO) a somewhat shaky mod generated on the

The Mod needs modifying by adding some insulation between that covered POSITIVE terminal and the starter motor cover housing.

It needs something like a nylon bush or at least a grommet on the metal housing. One little tug on that post and you get a MAJOR short circuit.

There are much better ways to attach to the Battery +ve terminal!

Thanks all. The bottom socket is the mod described in the write up you both posted. Top looks like a typical BMW plug in but it is different than what I am used to on the 1150's and 1200's. I'll look for the plug in part and get one. Otherwise it's to the battery and attach normal charge cable that I can hook a charger to.

It's not a "shakey mod" at all--it retrofits factory-design parts from later model to earlier model.

The starter cover is plastic and there is ZERO chance of short circuiting to it.

The auxiliary power socket (not jump-start stud) is incorrectly mounted as shown in bottom photo. The socket bracket is supposed to be attached to the left-side rear subframe bolt where it bolts to the silver main frame, i.e. straight up from the shifter pivot and a little forward of the rear foot peg attachments. It goes under the nut on the inside and a longer screw is not required.

You may aftermarket as opposed to genuine BMW parts here.

Thanks Kent.

Once again, I apologise as I was under the (wrong) impression that cover was an aluminium casting.

As you say, if it is plastic, then my comments are void.

As near as I can tell the positive post came on '04.5 and later (have had several '04s) oilheads except the RT. A great idea that came along far too late.

Marty…

Bob/hopz here. FYI, I have an R1100S too. Over the years I have found that the Pelican Parts Forum…

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/bmw-r1100s-r1200s-tech-forum/

Is a good resource. It can be a little "rowdy" at times, and some of the "old-timers" can be gruff, but overall you will almost always get good advice, help, or at least a good discussion.

OBTW… my "S" has a pig tail under the seat as well as a Powerlet socket low on the left side, which I use as a battery charging port.

Hey Bob, I have found that site. Thanks. Really looking forward to removing a ton of plastic to get to the battery. Spoiled by the GS.

Just an FYI, the Boxercup showed up in the US with two different batteries (and holders). Strip off the tupperware, and check which one you have before going out to buy the new one.

Also, the tank doesn't have to come off, you can just prop up the rear of it, and you will get enough room to replace the battery.
