12RT airbox access?

sideways

Recommended Posts

Has anyone with a 12RT gotten into the airbox to check their air filter yet?

I'd like to do this, but once again, the sad excuse for a manual has no information about how to do it. (I heard that it's somehow in a different spot or reached with a different procedure than was true with the 11 RTs.)

The absurdly expensive repair CD says the right side body work and right side tank cover have to come off to gain access to the air cleaner. I'll be doing my 10k service this week-end, so I shall find out...

Tank bag rail 4 screws.

Right trim panel, 4 screws.

Glove box cover 2 screws.

Right tank cover 4 screws.

Total of 14 torx head 6mm screws to access the air horn and the airbox.

Ouch!

Well, thanks guys.

Guess I won't be checking it out too often!

I would like to hear about what sort of filter is in there. Paper, I presume?

Also, I've been told that on the 1100 and 1150 boxer engines, if the engine oil was filled too much, the oil would blow back up through the air box.

(Beemer acid reflux?)

It would be very interesting to know if anyone finds oil in the airbox, once you get to it. My bike, for a while anyway, seemed to use less oil if I kept the sight glass almost covered. However, the last quart went through in 850 miles.
