Valentine Radar Detectors Power Supply

Atlanta Bob

Recommended Posts

We just bought a Valentine for our car but I would like to use it on my 99rt. I've scoured the internet looking for a power supply that goes directly from the radar detector to the BMW power supply on the dash but I can't seen to locate one. (The power supply provided by Valentine is intended to fit a car cigaretee lighter.) Does such an item exist?

Any other suggestions, dos and dont's are much appreciated.

Thanks to all.

i dont believe they make a cable with the bmw power plug on it, but you could get a second power plug for the valentine, and cut the car adaptor off of it and buy just a bmw power end and install it. so would then have your regular car power, and a separate cable just for your bike.

Valentine sells a direct wire power adaptor that you could then wire to a BMW style plug. The plugs are avaialble from a company called Powerlet. Look on the net or here.

What most of us do is keep that and a variety of other electronics in our tank bags and run leads out to the stuff that needs to be outside such as V1, GPS, etc.

There have been many threads on this. Try +tank, +bag, +electrification on a search and you should get all the info you need.

Since I have a number of bikes, I just put the V1 in the right side mesh side pocket of my Big Mak bag or, if I'm on the 1100S, where I only run the map case, I have some velcro on the underside of the Big Mak platen that I stick it to. In the latter case, I lose quite a bit of range on the laser sensor but the rest remains uneffected. There are mounts available from Cycle Gadgests or you can use an RCA shelf available from BMW of Salt Lake. With a little injenuity, you can get a V1, GPS, XM radio, and a cell phone up there. Of course, you just might get killed with all the distraction but, its not unusual to see.

Do not use the BMW power plug.

Your Valentine power cable is a standard 4-wire phone cable. Of these 4 wires, you only need to use the inside two (red and green) for power. These are VERY small wires. If you do not provide some form of stress/load relief (i.e. internal support), the wires will break, at the BMW plug, in a couple of months.

Instead, use the Powerlet PPL-002 plug with its built-in stress-relief bracket. It will plug right into your BMW and it will help the Valentine's power cable last longer. The Powerlet PPL-002 should run you about $10.

Now, if you want to spend a little more money, then purchase a Powerlet PPC-004. This is a Powerlet (i.e. BMW-type) plug with a coiled lead and with the phone clip connector on the other end, pre-wired to power up your Valentine or your Escort. The PPC-004 runs about $26.

Check with your local dealer or contact Powerlet directly.

Now for the really absurd question(s). If you don't use a tank bag and wish to mount the Valentine to a bracket on the handlebars, doesn't your body obstruct the laser/radar detectors ability to react to a rear radar unit?

Wouldn't the ideal mounting place for a radar detector to be on top of your helmet? smirk.gif

You are transparent to radar. The optical signal from the laser will be blocked. Don't worry overmuch about laser. Unless you are lucky enough to catch some splash off whatever is in front of you, the laser warning only serves to tell you to pull over and get your paperwork out. bncry.gif

Use the direct wire power adapter, Valentine part number 20305, $13. It has a red and black wire for power, and two phone cord-type plugs for the V1 and accessories. Get a BMW plug from Powerlet (you pick the plug you want). From the Valentine power adapter, connect the red wire to the center connector, and the black wire to the outer connector, on the Powerlet plug.

By going through the Valentine power adapter, the signals between the V1, the remote display and audio adapter (if you ever use them) get sent to the proper wires.

The BMW power plug is made by several companies, including Hella. I got mine from the Hella rep.
