Dances_With_Wiener_Dogs
I have delayed this ride tale for too long. Mid-May, I bought my new-to-me 1999 R1100GS from a fellow in the Oakland, CA area. Richard and Jacqueline were kind enough to not only check it out before the purchase but stored it at their place for the month (!!) prior to the point that I could come and fetch it. I think Richard was really trying to figure out how to roll back the odometer, so he could take it to Alaska. And if he did, I’m none the wiser! Enough blather, on to the fun pictures. Richard had a trick up his sleeve and artfully disguised this scooter to resemble the profile of a GS. Notice that he bungeed the saddlebags on and had cardboard to form the windshield and fender beak. Quite the production. Photo credit goes to Jamie Challinor. The following day we got down to the serious business of riding this new bike: A day or so later, I started on the trip for home. The route was to leave Benicia, CA and head up the coast highway to Arcata for the first day. Hwy 1 is now in my top 5 roads. Took some time out to explore a neat lighthouse and this fantastic 6-faceted Fresnel lens. The light keepers used to rotate it by hand on a bed of mercury. Second day was Arcata to Brookings, OR the long off-road way. Our good brother Bill Iffert, aka Tank, took me out to dinner and put me up in a whale-watching shack, at his workplace. These photos are beautiful but don’t begin to fully describe to beauty. About 6’ away from a 50-60’ bluff over the Pacific. And in the morning he brought over a Jet Boil stove, hard-boiled eggs, coffee & filters and a few bananas. Bill is truly a generous soul who works in a beautiful part of the country, southern Oregon. Bill cares for exotic birds, in part. Here are a few of them: Day 3 had me driving north to Gold Beach, east to Grants Pass over Bear Camp Rd, up to Crater Lake and then spending the night near Redmond, OR. 215 MPH---------DANG, this thing hauls! Day 4 was a shot home to Seattle to surprise my wife and some friends for the evening, since I wasn’t expected home for another day. Not many photos since it was raining most of the day. That’s it then. Thanks to everyone that showed up for the unveiling for the picnic. BIG SLOPPY THANKS to Richard & Jacqueline and Bill. Link to comment

Dances_With_Wiener_Dogs
Very nice, Steve. I could live in that shack. Yeah, no kidding. The night shots I posted were a lot darker than the photos suggest. It was a long exposure. I sat on this bench with my breakfast and watched the surf come in and go out, repeat, repeat. Really wonderful. Link to comment

Selden
Wow -- who would have thought that a GPS could result in such a performance increase! With a GS, the air pressure on your chest must have just about ripped your arms off. Link to comment
JustJean
OMG that was like just gorgeous! Link to comment
DieselDave
OK, I'll bite. How did you end up with 215 mph? My first guess: Freefall - but I'm pretty sure that would have left a few tell-tale dings (and a sizeable crater) Soooo........... Link to comment
Dances_With_Wiener_Dogs
How did you end up with 215 mph? Dunno, but I'd imagine it's something of missing satellite coverage and the disparity of distance covered according to those satellites...or some other better technical explanation...or just plain hocus pocus magic. phacker
Must be a Garmin thing. Last year I took a ride across country on my R1200GS. When I got back I was checking the Garmin for stats and the top speed read 297. Not bad for a 2005 GS. Link to comment
Laney
Congratulations on the new bike, and your pictures are gorgeous. I'm really jealous of your stop to visit Tank's "family." Those little Hyacinths look awfully easy to fall in love with - Link to comment

Makes me homesick to see the beauty of my home country and the great people from this board, like you and Tank. That's one fine lookin' GS! Link to comment

Endobob
Day 3 had me driving north to Gold Beach, east to Grants Pass over Bear Camp Rd, up to Crater Lake and then spending the night near Redmond, OR. I am certainly looking forward to our UnRally IX but the MOA in Redmond, OR is also calling me after seeing these photos! May need to take more time for this trip. Thank you for posting! bendbill
Thanks for the pics of a great ride, Steve. And for sheesh's sake, lemme know next time you're jetting around my way. As for Tank, if that's where you work, wherever do you ride to get away from it all? Link to comment
