First Gen GT - Overfilling Transmission?

Continuing on my quest to do my own maintenance, today I changed the tranny oil. The Clymer manual has a big warning about just adding oil to the bottom of the fill hole - and to not overfill.

I was careful, but the whole time I was adding small amounts of oil and rechecking the level, all I could think of was that any overfill would just come out the hole.

Am I missing something? Is there anywhere else for overfilled oil to hide and do damage?

With the bike on the center stand add oil until it reaches the threads. Which means that some oil will slowly drip back out of the transmission. This should be around 650 ml of oil.

When completely dry, which will only happen if the transmission has been disassembled, then the it will take about 200 ml more oil.
