upflying
Reno Air Races, Hot August Nights, close to skiing and mountain recreation, high desert climate, strong tax base, no income taxes.. I like the Minden, Carson City area too, sometimes Reno can be a bit too intense..like Vegas. Link to comment

As the hub city near where you live it may not be so bad. Link to comment
SageRider
IMO, Reno is a good place to avoid. Heavy traffic on the city streets, and rush hour traffic jams on the freeways. Infrastructure has not kept up with the explosive growth in the early part of this decade. It gets below freezing in the mornings from October through May. Average winter temps are 20s to 40s with excursions down into the below 0 range. Average summer temps are in the 90s with excursions above 100. Ultraviolet is extreme due to 4700' altitude and very dry atmosphere. Most of the time, the house will be closed up, running either heat or cooling, with only a couple "swing " months in the year. Medical care is so-so, with large hospitals in the area, but practitioner care is spotty at best. From a practical side, it does place you near one of the finest BMW motorcycle dealerships around, Sierra BMW. Not a price leader, but right at the tops in customer service and a great group of mechanics. Carson City, the Nevada state capital, is about 30 miles south of Reno, and a much smaller town. Minden is an additional 10 miles south, and is even smaller. Minden still retains some scenic beauty that hasn't yet been paved over, but Reno and Carson City have pretty much had their beauty destroyed by poorly planned development. Minden was only saved by the real estate bubble collapse. The entire region is hurting badly economically due to the collapse of building demand as well as the Indian Casinos diverting marketshare from Nevada's casinos. IMO, the only way to see if this is the area for you is to come out and spend some time at different times of the year. Link to comment

Prostitution is illegal in Washoe county (Reno), however, in Lyon county it's still legal. Just 6 short miles from the state capital building....... Link to comment
