Pulling front transmission seal on 1996 R1100R

I have to replace a leaking transmission input shaft seal on my 1996 R1100R. I haven't started taking the bike apart yet - I'm prepping for the job at this point. The shop manual says to drive out the seal from the inside. Is this necessary? Can I use a seal puller on the seal? If not, can one drive a screw into the seal and use a slide hammer to pull her out?
