PFP
Installed new tires yesterday and after the rear wheel was removed found rust in the area where the rear wheel bolts to the drive unit. Is this common or something to be concerned about? Thanks for your valued replies. Phil 04 RT Link to comment
Ken H.
TADT. The hub is steel and some surface rust is normal. Link to comment
flatbutt
I had that issue on my S. I installed a hub plug and that seems to have solved it. Link to comment
jm1515
I read about this 'hub cap' issue soon after I got my 04Rr. FWIW, I went to Lowe's and bought a chromed metal 1 1/4" hole plug made by Hillman. They're in the fastener section. Pops right on, looks good (to me ) and was 1.49 IIRC.... Link to comment
Haynes
You should remove the rear wheel and carefully clean the rust from the hub and the wheelstud threads. If you use a small wire brush or other abrasive, be careful not to touch the lip of the hub seal. When the rust is cleaned off, apply a smear of silicon grease to the hub surface. I'd avoid using anything like WD40 in case it has a reaction with the hub seal material. As suggested by others, get yourself a 32mm (1-1/4") sealing plug for the hole. Link to comment

Paul Mihalka
I think Keith Haynes stopped having the wheel center plugs. I think I got one of his last ones. Too bad... Link to comment
