Smug Mug type of Services

Newt

Recommended Posts

I tried to post some oil leak pictures that were too big for this board. I need to get a smug mug type of account for this and other purposes. What is the least expensive (i.e. free) service out there that would let you share pictures? What are some of the features I should get with a service like this? Thanks for your help.

SmugMug is the best, that is what a lot of people use here.

These are the freebies...

http://www.flickr.com/ - good, but if you download a lot of pics and want to keep track of them forever, then you need to upgrade to pro [about the same as SmugMug]. I set up my club's photos on flickr. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bmwriders_tampabay/collections/

I have used all three.

Really depends on your usage.

You can't directly link to Picassa and get an image on here. You can provide a link to your public photo file for others to peruse.

Disagree, SmugMug is considerably slower than Flickr and costs twice as much I believe (Flickr Pro is $25 a year).

Disagree too...... tried Flickr to find a possible alternative to my Smugmug Pro account.... and Flickr was slower down here... and more finicky to use at that. YYMV

I used photobucket for about a year. It was never ultra-performing but lately it's been doing strange things, e.g. displaying in the reverse order of uploading and directing my sign-on to other sites. I went to smugmug and am so far very pleased. For 40 a year I think the ease of use and professional set-up is a good deal.

For whatever reasons I find all the services obscure to the point of frustration.

I have ended up using Flikr more than the others but not without some problems.

It may be, and is certainly likely that all the problems lie with me, but I do not find any of them intuitive in use, and if you want to go into non-intuitive, structured mode (mentally) they all lack rational and easy to find explanations of how things work.

There- I feel better now...

Thanks, BULLman. That is just the info I was looking for. I will pick a freebie and go from there.

Just be sure you do understand the costs of so-called "free". for instance you may be giving them copyright control over your material and rights to use it in derivative works. You may not care about that, but you should know it. Read the user agreement.
