motorman587
This sucks..........I have been out sick all week. On Wednesday I go to the doc to get some stronger meds. On the way home I find out one of the twins has a fever and was asked by the wife (she is at work) take kids meds to grandma's house. All my in-laws and I live on 15 acres. (This has good and bad points.) My wife and I have 5 and grandma has 10 and there is small dirt road to her house. I swing by our house to get the meds. The dogs, love to run next to the truck to grandma's, like a little escort. I saw the two others, one to the left front and the one in the rear view mirror. The third I thought did not come as they some times do, stay at home. Next I hear is yelping and thump. My heart stank as I got to the yelping sound of my dog in pain. I was in panic mode. Once I calmed down the dog, "Sarge" calmed down too. He could not get up. With help from my in-laws got Sarge in the truck. Short story. I could tell his hind quarters were screwed up bad. Once at the doggie er, X-rays showed a shattered pelvic bone on both sides. This is the same "Sarge" that was run over by the wife and had pins in front leg a few months early. Our dogs are outside dogs and hang out on the property. We had to make a decision which was best for all. We felt that cause of his age, 8, his other front legs, and the possible that repairing him might not work. We did not want to put him through all the pain. It sucked, cried like a baby. He was put to sleep. It has taken me two days to type this and get it off my chest. He was a great dog. Sarge RIP................. Link to comment

Calvin (no socks)
John, sorry for the loss of a family member. I know how hard it is.. I was on a trip to Torrey a few weeks ago... got a phone call.. Pup less than a year old... House dog..She escaped from a fenced in excercise yard.. 50 vehicles all over my yard from a neighbors wedding..extra excitement..dogs crazy..I wasn't there for support.. 15 minutes before the wedding...Knock Knock on the door... My wife said last night, that it was the toughest day for her..she had grown to love that lil sucker.. I had to finish my trip and ride a hard 3 days home...I put it on the back burner of my mind (so I could focus on riding home). I was ok... till I saw my 20 year old daughter... it was real tough those first few days.. Calvin. Link to comment

EffBee
John, we had to put our Holly down three months ago. It was early for her. 8 years also. But it was best. Nevertheless it still hurts a great deal to this day. Bless you in your time of pain and sorrow. It will pass. It will take time, but it will pass. Link to comment

I know some are saying, it was just a dog.........but he was a cool one. One that would put his paws in his water bucket to cool off, one that would cross his front paws while laying down, one that would sleep as you walked up to him on the property as he was suppose to protect.............He was one laid back black lab........... bonerpart
John, he was not just a dog as you know. He was your friend and member of your family, with all of his many personal characteristics that you know by heart. I lost my dog Clancy on Feb. 12th and it may sound weird, but he was a closer friend than most of my human friends--OK any of them. He was 14 years old and had been my "little buddy" and constant companion through some very hard times. I still get especially sad every Tuesday, the day I had him put to sleep. Hang in there. AnRSguy
Find comfort in the fact that you cared for him before and after the accident, you did what was best for him when he needed you. You gave hime 8 wonderful years and he will always be in your heart. Link to comment
KMG_365
Dang, John . . . SO sorry to hear about this. It's surprising how our little "fur people" worm their way into our hearts, isn't it? Hang in there, mourn Sarge's passing and cherish the memories of those eight good years. RIP, Sarge. Link to comment

tallman
John, Sad news. It was an accident, and Sarge was doing what he loved to do. Just turned out badly. Try to focus on all the good times you spent together. It will take time. Sometimes, when I come home and go inside, even after 3 years, I still expect to see our 110 lb Rot/Lab, and sometimes, I do. Love to Melanie, and the girls. Link to comment

For what's its worth John, IMO you made the right decision putting him down. Pelvic fractures rarely have a good outcome.
