Timmer
I went out to see stage 1 of the Amgen Tour of California. Lots of CHPs and other on BMWs. Also Angels and Antlers...and a bunch of guys riding bikes up a steep hillside by the coast. The Angel is leaning up against the car putting her wings on in this photo... skinny_tom (aka boney)
Nice! I had the idea to get an early start this morning and watch the stage start in Sausalito before heading south. But then, well, I decided to sleep in... I was thinking about catching the race tomorrow as it comes over Trinity Road, but alas, I must work. Which road is that? Link to comment
ESokoloff
How soon before the lead rider came through did they close the road down? Link to comment
Timmer
It's Coleman Valley Road - near the top of the very steep grade about 1.5 miles from Highway 1, just north of Bodega Bay. You can see Bodega Head in the top of picture #43. If I didn't have an appointment with my eye doctor, I'd probably be on Trinity Grade myself. That's a much longer tougher climb. Wednesday should be interesting - they're going over Mt. Hamilton with rain being predicted. It should be a pretty good show for the South Bay folks. They shut down the road to cars 20-30 minutes before the first rider came through. Link to comment

Timmer
The bicycle riders pretty much did whatever they wanted right up to the time the escort for the leader was there. But remember - this was on a rural road where the only other option was to take to the hillsides and make like a mountain goat. I doubt they would allow you to do the same in town - especially anywhere near the finish Link to comment

Hamilton will be difficult, I expect the later climb up Sierra Road out of San Jose (roughly 2,000 ft in just under 4 miles) will be an excellent opportunity to mount the winning attack 20 miles before the finish... For anyone who hasn't been on these roads, the route from Livermore over Hamilton and then up Sierra Road is an excellent MC ride with awesome views of the Bay Area! ian408
Hammy's going to be exciting. That's for sure. Could be cold & windy as well as wet. You never really know Link to comment
