Hwy 118 from Fort Davis to Alpine to Big Bend?

Has anyone been on this road and can comment on it's quality? I'm putting together some alternative routes and would like to consider this road. tks

118 to Alpine is a nice road in good shape. 118 Alpine to Study Butte is wide open and generally straight and is also in good shape. Both are pale compared to 170 from the park to Presidio.
