smiller
Can you spin the oil filter off and put it back without emptying the sump? Yes, only a little oil will come out when you remove the filter. You will have to add oil if you replace it with a new filter because it holds about half a quart. And I guess I have the same question as Russell... Link to comment
Bud
Why would you want to? Because he is cheap like me and using Fram filters, which are only good for 3,000 miles, but his oil is good for 6,000. Link to comment

big-t
Why would you want to? I only change my Amsoil every 10-12K,but the filter gets changed every 6k. Filters used to break down and turn to mush when they were used for extended period.Hopefully they are made a little better nowdays with the extended change intervals, but the old habits prevail.. NonComp
I changed the oil while the bike was apart for the new clutch. At the time, I didn't fully understand the issues around draining the coolers. So when I added oil, I topped it up believing that the it was fully drained. Link to comment
jfixit
I have also changed only the filter while running synthetic oil, not wanting to waste a gallon of oil a month before winterization. Link to comment
PapaJ
+1, although I plan to ride the bike year round. Link to comment
