Bob Palin
Some donking was done this weekend in the Utah mountains The first ride was a casual stroll round the Burr Trail/Notom Road loop Right at the end of the Notom Road we found some water - last fall 3 cars were stuck here for 10 days after a storm, Calvin and Kaneman didn't fear the H2O Calvin rockets through on Whip's KTM, look carefully - he doesn't have any socks on... Kaneman dives in Tom lifts the front wheel on his way out Saturday brought an "interesting" Cathedral Valley loop starting at the high end near Mt Gleno. Around 10 bikes headed up the first easy gravel road, Kaneman found something black dripping from his bikes which resulted in a long wait which was extended when Tom psycho-kinetically made Jackie fall over and break her Jesse bag off. She was fine and we got the bag strapped back in place. Following that a couple of wimpy types turned back for lunch, no names but they were on a KTM and a VStrom. The rest of us made our way up on to Windy Ridge to be greeted by a healthy thunderstorm, at this point the intelligent turned back but some of us persevered, as soon as we were off the top of the ridge and on a section too narrow to easily turn round we were pelted with hail and snow. The top surface became very greasy and some falling ensued, Miko managed to pack his fender so full of mud the wheel wouldn't turn, he ended up taking it off. After a couple of miles of this we were back at the "main" dirt road and those with a shred of brains left decided to head back rather than heading down into the valley. Jonathan Multhaup and I turned downhill, pretty soon we met Luke and Boney who had been off scouting since the first stoppage, they shook their heads and warned of nasty mud ahead but turned around and came with us anyway. Luke watches Jonathan's rear end while he ponders the surface Good progress Fancy burnout After a bit more of this we made it down to the valley bottom where the sand was damp and packed, perfect. Boney leaps into the depths Immediately followed by Luke Jonathan made it round the whole loop and only fell 6 times, he developed something of an allergy to deep sand I think. At the end of the dirt he was still chipper and thus wins the Torey XIII Dirt Donker of the Weekend Award. The prize is an escorted ride through the Bentonite Hills after a rain storm (the escort will be in a helicopter). Link to comment
russell_bynum
Sweet! I had a great dirt ride Sunday morning, but didn't take pics (didn't even bring my camera this time...decided to just "moto"). Sand is fun. Stand on the pegs, pin the throttle, and laugh like a hyena as the bike careens around hopefully in the general direction you wanted it to go. I didn't encounter much mud, but there was some in the stream crossings. I'm sure if I was the bike washing type, it would be a pain getting all that red dirt off the bike. I definitely need to come back for more dirty fun. Link to comment

skinny_tom (aka boney)
Phil, if you dirt skillz are as good as I've heard, then you'd have no problems with that monster on this ride. Assuming you keep the knobbies on it. Lucky for me, my bike makes up for a good portion of my poor skilset. The rest of the time I faceplant. <-Ride report forthcoming. Link to comment

(43Mb download, no streaming, sorry my site host appears to be slow...) Tom, Some day I'd love to have your, Luke's, or Bob's dirt skills, but until then I'll have to do with your patience. Thanks for waiting and for helping me to pick up my bike. It was fun most of the time, but the big pig of a GS was a bit more than my lack-o-skill set could control some of the time as well. Regardless, it was a kick in the a&$ to ride the dirt with y'all. I'd do it again tomorrow, but with a tad lighter bike if possible. Link to comment
