Starter Re-assembly R1100 RT-P

I have taken the starter apart to lubricate. It came apart with no problems. However, getting that little ring back inside it's keeper is becoming a real problem. I tried a gear puller but the jaws won't really stay around the bottom of the keeper long enough to try and press the metal ring inside.

 

Anyone have any other suggestions on how to get the ring and keeper back together?

That horseshoe washer trick made it really a piece of cake. Put the washer on and applied some force with the gear puller and it clicked right into place.
