Fitting Wilbers on a 1200ST

My questions about replacement center around the front shock. Would it be a good idea to leave the rear shock off, jack the front of the bike by the engine far enough to get the shock out? I realize that you have to move the tank aft a little bit for access to the top shock mount. Or is there enough clearance to get it out without doing this.

 

Where are the sages when you need them?

The repair manual says to take the gas tank off the bike.

 

It also says to remove the alternator cover on the front of the engine.
