DeadEye
I was looking for information about removing the bodywork / faring on a R1100S to get at the battery, change the air filter etc… Here is how I proceeded : Unlock and remove seat Remove - 4 x 3mm x 10mm screws seat and tank brace Remove dash panel screws - 2 x 3mm x 20mm screws Remove - top edge Signal light 4 x 3mm x 30mm screws Remove - screws just below the Front air intake / oil cooler 2x 3mm x 20 mm ( picture looking up under cowl -screws left on edge of opening to indicate where to find them. Remove - bottom cowling screws 2 x 3mm x 20mm screws. ( these screws are in a bracket behind the BMW roundels. And are more easily reached from the opposite side with the front wheel turned towards the side you are removing. Once all the screws have been removed lift the latch just forward of the filler cap and remove the Left panel ( from on the bikes perspective ) Gently lift the panel, then move it away from the bike, You will need to disconnect the signal light - pinch the connectors two ears and wiggle the connector out. Remove the Right panel ( from on the bikes perspective ) You will need to disconnect the signal light - pinch the connectors two ears and wiggle the connector out. If you are replacing the air filter or battery continue : Remove the two 4mm x 20mm screws from the front of the air intake. separate the front air intake tube from the rear section that connects to the air box. you can now also remove the Left side screw that secures the fuel tank. Remove the Right side screw that secures the fuel tank. You should now be able to lift up the rear of the fuel tank to see and remove the two Phillips screws that secure the back of the air intake to the air box. You can use a small piece of 2 x 4 to hold up the Tank to gain some working space. ( I used a small adjustable wheel chock ) lastly remove the four 4mm hex screws that secure the frame that holds the top of the air box in place ! Reassemble by Following the steps in reverse. Attache the right side panel first, attach its signal light cable then replace all 7 screws leaving them loose until all have been started , the go back and make sure the panel figment is good and tighten all fasteners. repeat for the Left side.
