dmsantam
Good day all, I would like to clarify the correct usage of the BMW TDC/BDC tool, with 8mm pin on one side, and 6mm on the other: Bike is a 2015 r1200rs. I understand that there is a 8mm hole in the flywheel for TDC, and the 6mm side is for BDC. I want to find TDC with the tool. My understanding is that i should have the 8mm pin retracted, screw the tool in, and then engage the pin - at this point it will rest on the flywheel and not be fully out because I haven't found TDC yet. When i turn the rear wheel slowly, it will eventually find the 8mm hole, and click firmly into place. Is this correct? My second question is once this is engaged, is this pin designed to hold the flywheel in place while the cam gears are loosened from the cams? i.e. I don't have to hold the cam at all, and the loosening force can all be held by this pin. Of course when torquing up the cam gears, I have the timing tool which aligns the cams to each other. cheers, Link to comment
Boxflyer
There are a couple of videos on YouTube that show using this, and all the tools needed for checking/adjusting Cam Alignment. Here's one I made several years ago, but the procedure is still the same with factory tools. This is a 6 part series, but the information you are looking for starts here at 6:08 into this part 4 of 6. https://youtu.be/sVYpMKdrido?feature=shared&t=367 I misspeak about the torque required to tighten the bolts to the Cams. I say 56Nm, and it really is 65Nm...I transposed the numbers in the audio, and I can't simply edit that once a video is posted on YouTube. Please read the Description of each video for lots of information about any changes for the video as well as links to other useful documentation and files I have stored on a Google Drive. If you have a R1250 ShiftHead bike, here is a 4 part series that covers just the Cam Timing and Valve Clearance Checks for that engine with a somewhat better description of the tools used. https://youtu.be/PQeNcD0gGOw If you just want to know about the tools specific to doing this kind of service on the R1250, here is a video about those tools. https://youtu.be/CZ8N--cQ7mI If you need to find any of these tools, they are available here from one of our board members @MachineJoe https://www.pilzmachine.com/1200-wethead Hope this helps, Brad 2 1 1 Link to comment
