Cardan Shaft 2015 RT

Recommended Posts

Greetings, I just picked up my 2015 R1200 RT from the dealership for its 60k service. The dealer replaced the Cardan Shaft on the bike because there was a recall notice on that part. I asked how long the notice had been out to which he replied it just came out. So, the part was replaced at no cost. Just wanted to pass along the recall notice.

May I ask, what is the cardan shaft? I have a 2015 RT that will be serviced soon.

Thanks

Afternoon reg26

Cardan shaft is the drive shaft.

Does anyone have a link to the recall notice?  Does it apply to the 2014 as well?  I do my own service, but will take it to the dealer if the recall applies.

If its recognized by NHSTA, you can try ...

https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls

and put in your VIN

That site works for safety related recalls, but not manufacturer's customer service or other nonsafety recall campaigns.

It might be wise to ask the dealer if it applies to your specific motorcycle.

My dealer told me he was unaware of this recall until he was servicing my bike. He verified with BMW (not sure who he called for that) and they told him to go ahead and replace it.  The number on my service ticket says “33 73 501 - replace Cardan shaft, invoice via warranty, defect, 8733100000”  hope this helps

Yes this I have been aware of for quite some time. Was hoping the one the OP started was something new. Although I have had no problems with mine but have always thought why just the police bikes. They are the same drivetrain.

According to the link, Police models are effected as manufacturer anticipates those bikes will jump curbs frequently, thereby increasing the range of motion on the suspension, (Really! )

Well, there have been many times I wish I had a police bike- just to deal with the crazy drivers out there. But, I don’t and I have not been jumping any curbs. Not sure why the dealership felt the need to replace. I guess a thank you is in order?
