What are the options for obtaining a duplicate ignition key?

Vehicle: 2011 BMW R1200RT (Model: K26, 0440)

 

My RT came from the previous owner with only one key.  I'd like to have a spare key made but I'm uncertain as to the available options.  There are key "blanks" available on ebay but I believe the BMW keys are "chipped" and require a dealer service to make them functional.  Am I correct?

 

What is the best option for obtaining a spare key?

If you have a local dealer, go in with the registration/title for the bike (with your name on it) and your ID. They can order one for you. Should be close to a hundred bucks.

I’d call first to make sure you know what your dealer wants. I know mine requires matching registration and ID - I’ve read online where others want more or less.

The dealer is not the picky one. It’s corporate covering their butt. Hence them needing solid proof of ownership.

Sure, but the dealer is the one we have to talk to (and they don't always seem to get the same messages from corporate).
