Gear indicator failing

On a  friends 07RT with 97k miles.  

 

First it was blank for 1st and sometimes 2nd when cold, but would start working after a few minutes.  Then sometimes the problem persisted or even began when hot.  Now 1st and 2nd seem to be fine, but it goes blank or flashes on and off in 6th.  

 

Any thoughts?

First thought would be a failing transmission gear indicator potentiometer (on rear or transmission). Or sometimes gear oil can leak into those gear indicator potentiometers & cause electrical problems.
