N to Atascadero

Recommended Posts

I did a great ride several yrs ago to get to Temecula Days, by going thru the San Gabriels, then the San Bernadinos, and then Idyllwild.  It was very memorable and I though I'd try it again, as it hadn't snowed in weeks, and Todd hadn't scheduled Ramona Days yet, so I called on a couple of hooligans that I know on a Sunday and they said they'd ride along at least 'til the Grizzly Cafe on Monday.  After a bruch there one decided to head home and one continued on with me until the bottom of ca38 near I-10.  So I headed up 243 then down 74 and spent the night in Hemet.  Don't stay at the Vagabond!  I then left the next morn to Anza Borrego, and Mt Palomar and spent that night in Ramona.

My riding buds indicated that they'd be willing to do the whole ride again the upcoming weekend but I nixed that idea and instead suggested something up north.  We hemmed and hawed and settled on Atascadero as a destination and stay 2 nights there. We left on Friday morn from Angeles Crest Shell and headed up ca2.  It was 50º when we left at 9am with some left over storm clouds lingering around but it soon dropped to the low 40ºs, and it was beautiful.

We turned left on Big Tujunga headed down into the SFV.  I don't think this is as heavily traveled as Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest as evidenced by the rougher surface and cracks.

We then took a couple of surface streets over to Little Tujunga.  I've been on this road many times but never this early in the morning, and headed N.  Again it was beautiful.

I took the rt in for tires last summer in Alhambra and there happened to be a low mileage 19gsa on the floor. ACH is 10 min away...  you ve heard this before, right?

we hope to see you in Oakhurst.  I got my two shots.

Ok.  Some more pics.  That first day we put on about 330mi from our meeting point in La Cañada Flintridge and almost all of it non-slab.  More Little Tujunga.  I said it earlier, but the early morning light with the clouds and blue sky made for a wonderful ride.

The next day we headed out to Parkfield.  This is on Cholame Rd headed N from ca46.

G0213222forweb.thumb.jpg.cba82ea951696e058e2d91ea33dfb45f.jpg

The weather looked a little sketchy, and one of the locals looked north and said he was positive it was going to rain up where I wanted to take these two on Parkfield grade, so we cooled our heels and looked around a bit and had some kind of vanilla bean/apple concoction for an afternoon snack.

There are a couple of dogs that roam around up there but they are harmless.

By the time we finished eating the weather had cleared so we headed north for 5mi of hard packed (mostly) dirt road uphill followed by a few more miles of paved that took us to ca198.

Rats.  I'm done again.  Anyway my riding buddies really liked this road heading out of Parkfield and they were fine on their RTs.  Again it was a beautiful day for riding.  Hopefully they will pitch in with some pics of their own.

Frank and Hakan had set this Central CA ride up several years ago but it never caught on.  We decided to do it just on a whim as the weather looked good for the weekend and it surely didn't disappoint.  Next time I may want to try the road that heads north out of Coalinga, for we surely will be doing this Central CA ride again.  I have more pics to post.  maybe next week.

@flyingfinn and @stubble take this road every year to get to DV, and I always wanted to try it.

"they were fine on their RTs."

Did ya not notice the large "Kawasaki" on the black "RT"?

After that 5 miles, I was feeling downright comfortable on dirt. To be fair though, that road was in very good shape.

Great shots John. We didn't really get any pics of the ride. We knew you were getting one every 5 seconds... :18:

It's worth noting that all of these roads are accessible on a day ride from Cambria (the upcoming UNRally site).

One of note that has been, and is still closed, is Nascimiento-Ferguson Rd. I can’t imagine the logistics involved in trying to repair fire damage on that skinny, winding, remote road.
