PatM
I did the valves on my R1200 RT last week. Everything is good except I saw a few drops of oil leaking from the valve cover after my first long ride even though it was torqued to spec. Just being curious, I searched and can't find an answer, is there an expected life for the valve cover gasket? I'm at 93K KM which is about 50K miles. The bike is a '16 model. I have new gaskets on the way. Link to comment
Alfred02
No The gasket should have been fine. You either damaged the rubber when you took the cover off Or It got misplaced/distorted during re-install These gaskets get re-used dozens of times with no issue as they are rubber. That said, as it did leak now I would not trust it again, so replacing it now is the most sensible way to go. It might be worthwhile of slightly loosening and re-tighten to see if that fixes the problem. Just be careful as they require such low torque and a lot of the torque wrenches really suck in the very low settings (inaccurate). As lower the torque as higher quality wrench (read expensive) is required. I had to order mine from Germany to get a high quality wrench. Link to comment
AndyS
Have you checked for a hair or some contaminant across the sealing face? Link to comment
realshelby
Double check that the gasket around the spark plug hole is installed correctly!!! It CAN be put on backwards.......Causes the main gasket to not seat properly. 1 Link to comment
