Parking light replacement

One of my parking lights has burned out. I haven't started digging into it yet, so maybe I'll find it's a pretty obvious fix, but any tips for getting to it? And should I plan on replacing the good one as long as I'm in there? If it's a pain to get to I'd rather do it once than twice.

The standard RT has only one which you can get to by pulling on the rubber boot poking out of the roof of the opening to the oil cooler.

Unless I'm calling them by the wrong term. On my bike (2002) the central headlight has two smaller lights, one on either side.

Fog Lamps.

Pain to get to. Some say sitting on the ground and reaching up by the forks is the easiest. Have not needed to check this out fortunately. thumbsup.gif

I'm not that familiar with the dash configuration on the R1150RT-P, but I wouldn't think you'd have the civilian speakers in there to get in the way and if you remove the tupperware it is SO much easier! thumbsup.gif

 

Removing the T-ware IS a bit tougher with the RT-P due to the crash bars, but you might not have to remove them all the way (see the link in the header on M/C FAQ). If you can loosen the panels just enough to pull the tab from the front nose and pull it to the side up against the crash bars, it should give you more room for your hand up in there.

 

There is a rubber boot covering the bottom of the well containing the bulb which just pulls down and off. There is a wire keeper with two little ears/tabs that you must squeeze together and push upwards to get them off of their respective little hooks, then pull down and the bulb will fall out (downwards) and the keeper is retained on a hinge. You'll then need to pull the power wire from the spade connector (the ground is provided by the shield held in place by the wire keeper).

 

Installation is the reverse of removal, but be careful NOT to touch the glass of the new bulb with your bare hands (skin oil will shorten its life). If you do touch it, clean it off with rubbing alcohol on a pad or cotton ball. There is also a indexing truncation cut on the flange that tells you which way to install the new bulb. Be sure it seats all the way up in the housing or the wire keeper will not engage the little hooks. This should be obvious when you see it.

 

For a bike as old as yours with one bulb gone I would definitely do BOTH bulbs while you're in the mode. When Leslie's first bulb went on her 2002 R1150RT (civilian model) the second one went just a few weeks later. Unless you're pulling the tupperware every four to six weeks for servicing like we are, you're likely to save yourself some hassle.
