Sunday ride in San Diego

Recommended Posts

My buddy and I went for a nice ride through some of the San Diego mountain areas Sunday. He's on a '05 Road Glide screaming eagle and I'm on my '12 RT. So.....at first I thought this was all about riding, but now I'm on to him, it's really about food.

Our first stop was the Julian Pie company in Santa Isabel.

I'm doing the keto thing so 'no pie for me', but it was my pleasure to watch about a dozen people wolf down pie and ice cream like it was the second coming. Seriously people, there's more pie right there in the store, slow down and take human bites. One guy was in such a rush to pack that pie into his face he forgot to lower his mask. He looked around and when he saw me looking, I just gave him 'that look'...…... you know 'that look'.

While I was sitting there watching my buddy scarf down his pie and cinnamon ice cream, I saw a lot of bikes, 50% Harleys, 50% crotch rockets. Apparently I wasn't notified of the loud exhaust contest, nor the acceleration contest away from the Pie company. Was fun to watch, I held up score cards.

When we were leaving, a couple geezers on hogs were parking next to us. They mentioned that they rode 2+ hours for pie. I'm seeing a theme here on the biking thing......

Next it was off through Julian where we walked around and checked out the stores and did some very important reconnaissance. We identified 2 more pie shops, a wine tasting place, 2 beer places and an ice cream shop. Oh, and they had some other shopping stuff but I didn't pay much attention, I was focused on the important stuff. I did see one other RT there, a newer one in silver, very nice. Rest were Harleys, like a mile of them.

We took off and went through sunrise highway which was nice because it was a little cooler. My bike said it was 77° when I left the house and it hit 90° in Santa Isabel. We stopped a few times to grab a picture, on one stop at Kwaaymii point we met a group of bikers that were taking a break. My poor RT was out numbered by the Harleys once again. Once the lead lady said it's time to ride and did the cattle herding signal, the rest popped up to attention and mounted up. Apparently they are scared of her, probably rightfully so as she was on a huge road king and handled it like it was a brand new vacuum cleaner. They formed a line and rode out. Seemed like a cool bunch of folks out to have a blast, hope the rest of their ride was awesome. That left just my buddy and I at the spot, oh and 1 Jeep. That's me all the way to the right, away from all the big baggers.

A few more stops in the mountains. Here is your fearless author posing with his awesome RT.

Remember when I said this was really about food......well the next stop was the Grand Old BBQ in Flynn Springs. If you like good BBQ, this is the place. The ribs are ridiculous......

We shared a pound and I promptly destroyed my diet with a light beer and 3 ribs. I did refrain from the sauces, but honestly these ribs are seasoned so perfectly putting anything other than a mouth on them is a shame.

From there it was a nice ride home.

It never occurred to me that riding was going to get me (more) fat. :5170:

Yeah, I’d travel for pie. :java: For good BBQ, I’d forge a trail through the Darien Gap!

Good to see a San Diego area ride report.

(I visited there during the 5 years my daughter & SIL lived there. Bought my RT there.)

Yah, two or three good pie places in Julian. I like the one right in middle of downtown.

Sunrise Hwy is great.

Do make more ride reports from there.

(Palomar Mountain ?)
