Think my alternator is shot

Damn thing. Battery light came on up on the highway. Aside from that she was running just fine. Tried to make it to the exit I needed and then whamo. Break failure came on. Tested em and they were soft. Got over to the side started down shifting with a couple of back fires. Once I came to a stop I had battery power but no turn over. What do you guys think?

Sounds like the poly drive to the alternator belt has failed. Do a search on here for info on how to change it - a simple DIY job.

I agree with Boffin - how old is the poly v belt? I'm on my 7th one on my 1150RT! It's a weak spot that seems to be exaggerated on my bike.

Seven?

My S lost it at 48K, the GS ADv went 60K. Sounds like you might have an alignment problem somewhere. Have you tried a straight edge across the pulley faces and a flashlight to check for light? I know your bike has some pretty high milage but that seems excessive to me.

Yes, excessive to me too, I'll do the straight edge this weekend as it is tensioning time (6K) for the latest belt, hopefully it is not trashed as I gave my spare away at DV and forgot to get one in San Diego last week.

As close to centerline as you can get and rotate to a couple of different positions to obviate against a bent shaft somewhere.
