RFW
BMW says use 3-bond on the cylinder base. Is this a Hylomar equivalent, or is there a permatex equivalent? The short answer is yes, Permatex "Grey" silicone gasket sealant is the right stuff. I have used if after a complete engine disassembly on my '86 K100RT, and the motor is as tight as the day it was made. Has never leaked a single drop of oil or coolant. If you look at the package you will see that it is approved for use by several bike manufacturers. It is also an alcoxy silicone which means it generates no acidic byproducts when curing. By the way, BMW "Drei Bond" is made by the Japanese company whose name is "Three-Bond". ("Drei" being "three" in German). So much for great German engineering! Bob. Link to comment

LD Like Bob said, just about any Permatex Silicone sealant will work great. I like their Ultra Black and have been using it for years. Just remember, clean ALL the oil off both surfaces and only put the silicone sealant on sparingly. You should be able to see through the layer of sealant. Even though the manuals all call for 3-bond, the factory has been using the silicone-based sealants for years. Mick Link to comment

That's because "3-Bond" is silicone sealant! ...at least the type of 3-bond that BMW specifies is. Here's their corporate website... http://www.threebond.com/ Bob. Link to comment
