CraigB
After missing a few turns yesterday on a ride, I know I need to get something to mount my phone or a GPS on so I can see where I am while riding. Seems like there are a lot of options out there but I'd like to ask what others have used on similar bikes to mine. I don't have any round bar area to grab hold of and the only place I can see is the center of the triple clamp. It' looks like the previous owner had something bolt on with two hex head bolts and that would be great option if anyone has seen something that would bolt on there. Let me know if you have any ideas. I'd like to buy something vs having something fabricated. I appreciate any ideas and here's a pic of the triple clamp. Craig Link to comment
joeyjamb
Not sure if you can use the bolts just inside the forks but I have a couple of these: Ram Mount Motorcycle Base with 9mm Hole and 1-Inch Ball https://www.amazon.com/Mount-Motorcycle-Base-Hole-1-Inch/dp/B0012TRIY4/ref=sr_1_11?keywords=ram+nut+ball+mount&qid=1575947418&sr=8-11 1 Link to comment

Thank. Ram Mount seems to have a lot of options for mounting systems. Any idea on the best way to get a USB port up to the bars? Craig Link to comment
SAS
I bought a USB connector at Cycle Gear and attached directly to the battery and ran the end up to the handle bar area and secured with plastic tie wraps. Works great. You may want to get a dual USB as then you don't have to disconnect to work the other gear, if you have multiple devises. I have a Ram mount for my GPS and the same mount works for my iPhone 6. 1 Link to comment
RogerC60
Just a thought on USB chargers. Most modern phones are capable of Quick Charge 3.0. I've found that if I have my phone on a regular charger and I'm using a navigation app and also listening to an audio book, the battery drains anyway. If I have it on a QC charger everything is fine. The charger you can get from Cycle Gear is not a Quick Charge. Here's one on Amazon that might work for you: https://www.amazon.com/SAE-USB-Adapter-Motorcycle-Disconnect/dp/B078FTSJWJ/ 1 Link to comment

I just keep it charged as most camp sites don't have power at tent sites. 1 Link to comment

SAS
I have 2. a Nuvi 265w which I use on the bike and its cradle is the same size as the iPhone 6. I also have the Garmin Drive 51, which at this point Ram has not made a mount cradle for it, although you can get a squeeze type with bungees but just have not done that. I would rather have a cradle for it. I trust the cradle more than a bungee type . The cradle has a nice snap to it when you install a unit into it. The phone is the only one I care about and it snaps on nicely and am not worried about it. 1 Link to comment
joeyjamb
Most phones will get by with a 2.0 amp charger even with running multiple apps. If my phone is draining the battery and I don't need the navigation for a bit like on the highway and I have 50 miles to go to the next turn, I will turn off the screen. It'll still navigate but the screen off will allow the battery to pick up a bit of a charge. I am not a fan of the hardwired usb ports. I prefer a cigarette adapter because I have had times when the aggressive use of the phone trying to charge has killed the charger. If that happens on a long trip I can pick up a cigarette adapter for $5 at walmart or a gas station that will do the job. If you want the inline usb, I would recommend using an SAE connector. With that, you also use the port to hook up a charger or pick up a cigarette socket to use if the usb dies. Joe 2 Link to comment
