Gear Indicator Failing

On '07RT with 97k miles.

First it was blank for 1st and sometimes 2nd when cold, but would start working after a few minutes.  Then sometimes the problem persisted or even began when hot.  Now 1st and 2nd seem to be fine, but it goes blank or flashes on and off in 6th.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the gear indicator potentiometer is in troubles...

You can access it by removing the left hand footpeg plate: it's actually easier than it sounds. You may try cleaning the potentiometer connector, but usually that kind of problem is due to a part failure.

Good news is replacing the part takes minutes, bad news is I don't think GS-911can be used to test that potentiometer.

Afternoon Jan

The usual cause of what you are seeing  is contamination inside the gear position switch (switch is on rear of trans mounted to trans case & driven by the shift drum).

Most times it is the rear shift drum gear-oil seal (seeping)  leaking allowing gear oil to enter the shift position indicator switch fouling the inside, but it can also be contaminated with road water or moisture (especially if the rear of trans area is ever power washed).

New gear position switch (potentiometer) is well over $200.00 so maybe look on E-Bay or possibly try to clean yours out (not sure how to do that though).

If it is full of gear oil then you will also have to install a new shift drum rear oil seal.

Mine acts up every so often (2009 GSA). I disconnect at the connector above the gear shift lever, spray with elect. cleaner, little dielectric grease and reconnect. Works perfect afterwards.

Had to do twice in the past year.  Just had to do it and made a sleeve to protect the connector from dirt/road debris/etc. Will see if that helps.
