2020 Honda Rebel 300 And 500 Preview

Honda has some long-lived models in its lineup. Iconic names like the Gold Wing and CB lines, and, of course, the small-bore Rebel cruiser. Until 2017 the Rebel was a 250-sized bike that countless beginners used to get their first taste of life on the road, then the Rebel 500 and 300 were introduced. The change has turned out to be a positive one, and Honda is revising both platforms with more creature comforts and a few additional amenities for 2020.

“The Rebel 500 and 300 are great examples of the sense of freedom that draws so many of us to motorcycling, which is why they're the choice of new riders who want a fun ride but aren't willing to sacrifice style,” said Chris Cox, American Honda's manager of experiential marketing/public relations, in a company release. “With key updates to the 2020 model and an expanded suite of accessories, these models will deliver even more independence and enjoyment.”

To start, both models receive an assist-slipper clutch, reducing clutch pull effort by 30 percent and helping to keep the rear wheel composed during downshifts. This is a popular feature on bikes aimed at new riders, and a welcome addition to the Rebel duo.

The front and rear suspension components get some much needed attention as well, with new forks featuring stiffer spring rates and oil levels and revised shocks, also with stiffer spring rates. Suspension performance was an issue when the bikes first arrived and it's nice to see Honda taking action in this department.

Both also get a new instrument panel and LED lighting.
