Selden
The Chinese eBay muffler for my F700GS arrived today. I'm dealing with a strained muscle in my side, so I won't be attempting to put it on before I feel better, but here is an initial overview. Cosmetically, it's gorgeous, with clean welds and excellent finish. With mid-pipe, it measures about 25 inches long, slightly shorter than the F700 GS OEM muffler. 3.2 pounds total weight (including mounting screws, bracket, and springs). Since I have not removed the OEM can, I don't know its weight, but I am guessing at least 10 pounds. Saving weight and improving appearance over the ugly OEM can are my two main goals — preferably without adding too much noise. Here are some photos: Interior baffling looks effective. The black rubber button on the end cap covers an access port to a hex bolt for removing the baffle, if you want to annoy your neighbors. I don't. The big remaining questions are: 1) How does it fit? 2) How does it sound? I'm not a fan of loud bikes, so if it's too loud, I will be putting it up for sale. 3) How durable is it? Carbon fiber cans have a mixed reputation, and assuming that I keep it, I won't be able to answer that question until a year or so from now. The seller was very communicative, first apologizing that they had run out of U.S. stock, offering to ship by DHL, then asking for a photo of the F700GS for their engineer to review for suitable fit before actually shipping. Overall, I am much more positively impressed by both the product and the support than I expected. Time will tell. This is the listing on eBay : https://www.ebay.com/itm/362490475948 Link to comment
Selden
I still don't feel up to going for a ride longer than a mile, but well enough to pull the OEM muffler (10.8 pounds) and see how the eBay carbon fiber can fits and sounds. The answer to both questions is "not bad". I'll have to make my own hanger bracket to attach to the frame, and the loops for the retainer springs don't line up perfectly, but I think I can make them work. When I first started it up, I thought it would be too loud, but after a short ride, without earplugs, it actually seemed to get quieter at speed, even at 6000 RPMs. If anybody staying in Ellijay wants to come down and take a look/listen, I'm not going anywhere for the next 24 hours. 504 Noelle Lane, phone 706-300-0743. Take highway 52 East from Ellijay, turn Left on Jay Bridge Road (which is highly entertaining), and when you get to the stop sign at the end, turn Left on Hightower Church Road, go ~0.4 mile, and turn Right into Hightower Overlook. NOTE: Noelle Lane is a one-way loop, with traffic circulating counter-clockwise. Link to comment
Stir
It looks like a Remus Hexacone clone. Link to comment
Lowndes
Selden, Can you tell if it's real carbon fiber or just a carbon fiber looking film on aluminum?? Link to comment
Tri750
For that price, even of it only lasts a couple years , why not. The thing about the CF veneer is that it will start to fade from sun exposure and the muffler itself may begin to fracture in time. Often with an aftermarket exhaust they are great at first then get progressively louder as the packing burns out or the honeymoon phase ends and you end up putting the stock one back one after a time. No harm done. You may even put it back on now and then just for kicks. I might be tempted to buy another and stick it in the rafters if your 700 is a long term bike . so it lasts a couple three years before falling apart , for that price you can root around in the rafters and put a new one back on. Stuff like that muffler are normally short term runs. You won't see them avail in a year or even 6mo maybe . I think it's a cool enough piece. Link to comment
