Loose front discs

I've had my 2014 RT for a week now and dropped my front wheel off to get a new tire.

While moving it around I hear a "chink" sound and find that both disks have some play in them.

I can move each one, just a little,  maybe 0.010" or less.

is that normal?

Other bikes i've had have been very solidly mounted.

That is pretty normal as your brake rotors are semi-floating so aren't solidly mounted to the wheel.

DR, if there were excessive play in the rotors, could that be the cause of the high-speed vibration?

Possible, but the rotors should not be  loose enough to run out far enough to cause issues (at least at speeds that a BMW can move at). Most if not all  of the looseness or play should only be in the rotation direction.
