Clymer manual says to use antisease lubricant on the shaft drive splines.

Okay, I can do that.

I was expecting to see it say to use moly lube (say, 60%). Any comment??

I'd have gone with Optimoly TA.

Morning Redman

BMW service manual says to use Staburags NBU 30 PTM on the splines.

Added: the BMW 1200RT manual says to use Optimoly TA on the splines (about the same application only later model) . That is also getting difficult to find in the U.S. as I (believe) it has been changed/replaced with  Castrol Molub-Alloy paste HT.

Have been searching for info on this Castrol Molub-Alloy paste. Not finding any specification that describes it in any detail.

By the name, i suspect is a molly grease.

Not finding it available locally, but see the small tube is 32-35 bucks.

Wondering what the molly content is.

I dont have much left of a Honda MolyLube60 from my experience with drive hub in rear wheel of Suzuki shaft drive bikes. I understand that stuff is now replaced with Honda MolyLube77 in little 2 oz tube that i can get for $25. I understand that the Molly content is 60% and now 77% , meant for high pressure load, like drive splines.

At the BMW dealer parts counter the parts guy seemed knowledgeable-experienced, so while I was getting other parts, so I asked "what do you guys use on the drive splines", and he said "the molly grease that can get at about any auto parts store". I was thinking that is the stuff in grease gun tube for $5 that says for brake pads and u-joints, that I understand is fairly low molly content. I looked in a couple autoparts stores and didnt see anything differernt.

Any further description-discussion of what sort of lubricant should be used??

Evening Redman

I really haven't put much thought into it as I still have some Staburags NBU 30 PTM that I use.

It probably doesn't make a lot of difference as the drive shaft to final drive splines don't slide or work so about all the grease has to do is prevent rust & corrosion & not dry up or get displaced.

It doesn't seem  to need a high pressure lube as those rear splines just don't wear out so some do use the Honda MolyLube60  (personally I wouldn't be afraid of using that). Honda MolyLube60 is pretty good at staying in place once applied.

Have you tried your local BMW dealer as some dealers will just give you a bit from their shop supply (especially if they know you or  feel sorry for you).

Hi Redman, if you really want the Castrol Optimoly TA, have you tried Porsche dealers? I believe it is something they use as well.
